Full Version: Brakes Pump Up

I was getting very little braking before no matter how much I pumped the pedal. I bled the brakes and the ABS unit and now it will have some braking action on the first pump, a little more on the next, and more on the next but it's still not even good let alone great.

This car has been sitting maybe 10 years so I'm guessing Master Cylinder but wanted some insight before I go replacing parts.

Thanks.

if you just can't get brake pressure, then I would guess master cylynder or calipers

I'm getting brake pressure, quite a bit of squirt when im bleeding the brakes, but like I said each pump gets progressively better stopping but no where near what it should be.

This fluid is probably from 1990 and I know it needs to go but it is not black and brown. There are no leaks that I can see.

I just want to make sure before I pronounce it a master cylinder that it is actually that. It just seems weird I'd be getting any pressure at all if the MC was bad.

I should also note that there is a large "whoosh" sound that goes with pressing the pedal. The first time you press, it's loud, the second time not as loud, third not as loud as the second. I would GUESS that this is because fluid is being pushed past the seals, but the seals seal progressively better with each push of the pedal.

The only problem with this theory is I do not have any vacuum going to the power brake booster, so that woosh may just be air moving in and out of the line that is going to the booster.

I would try and hook the line up and see if it helps the brakes.

Got a new brake MC. Bleeding once helped the braking action, under full pedal the ABS was working. However the ABS light is still on in the dash and it doesn't have a firm pedal.

Bled the rear brakes more, but did more than just bleed, bled until new fluid was showing. Old fluid had lots of rust flakes and other particles and pedal feel improved alot. Now instead of the brakes working like dragging a stick on the ground it's more like a block of wood on the tire...
