getting ready to start a 1g GSX build and was wondering if there would be a benefit from building an engine with a 1g block and 2g pistons. would it be worth the trouble and money, and what all would be involved?
Justincredible
yes. the 2g pistons have a higher compression ratio. and is beneficial. So your getting a 6 bolt block with higher compression for cheaper than aftermarket pistons.

AFAIK, all that has to be done is a small amount of machining on the 2g pistons to accept the 1g pin.

You have that backward. 2gs use a larger pin than a 1g. The 1g rods have to be opened up to accept a 2g pin. Either way the 2g pistons are stronger than 1g and have a higher compression ratio.

is there a site that explains this mod?

You might just be better off getting a forged set of pistons. My current setup is 2g 8.5:1 pistons on 6 bolt rods. Its not cheap to machine the rods though. And you have to factor in the price of the pistons, and rings. I had mine done at kalinas last year. Here’s some of the prices

R/R pistons in sets 4.00 times ................... 26.00
Align small rod in sets 4.00 times .............. 13.99
Machine rods to cust spec ......................... 178.75

I got my pistons and rings from topline, but they always seem to be sold out of the 2g pistons anymore. If I remember correctly I paid around 175.00 for the pistons and another 60.00 for the rings. I already had the 6 bolt rods. So I paid over 450.00! If I could do it all over I would have gone with a decent set of forged pistons, maybe even a rod/piston combo. Good luck.

thanx for the info I'm just looking at my options not sure what I am going to do yet.

Here are the machining specs for installing 2G pistons on 1G rods.

thanx nate, is there any other parts I would have to buy?

You might want to replace your rod bearings since you are taking the rods out. If you are taking your crank out, I'd replace the main bearings also, but if your crank is staying put I'd leave 'em alone.
mitsu90
I don't have a block yet, if I do this I think I will replace all the bearings that way I don't have to worry about them. and I might as well make it as fresh as I can no sence in doing it half assed.

based on the failure rate of swapping main crank bearings, if yours are fine leave them alone.

thanx for the advise, biggthumpup.gif

what ohter part should I leave alone or replace? unsure.gif

if he's all ready going to all the trouble to fit the 2g pistons in ...why not get better quality forged pistons? if he's going to keep modding

money is the reason

Price ends up being pretty close if you are buying 2G pistons and paying for machining as well. If the pistons are free then it might be worth the machining cost though.
mitsu90
all of the forged pistons I have seen for sale have been well over $500

thanx for the link

what do you have in 6 bolt blocks?
TotalEclipse97
what hp ratings do the 2g pistons have compared to a set of forged pistons?
natedogg
2G pistons have run 10's on the proper setup and tune.
xian 1g
they'll be more than sufficient than the 350-400hp goals of your project. don't know the actual specs of hp ratings....
