ok, since I have got done with my project I have been noticing that I have to replace about a quart of oil every week and a half (roughly). it is not leaking, (I know its hard to beleive that a DSM is not leaking) and it doesn't smoke bad. it does smoke on start-up and when I get on it.... but according to the people that have seen the smoke, they say it is black smoke... and oil is blue smoke, so what is the most common opinion as to what the problem is???
valve guide seals, rings, ect.

Turbo? Are you still running the 91+ style water oil cooler? Those have a history of leaking and getting into the coolant.

valve stem seals if it smokes at startup and continues to smoke. that's what it is usually.

the head was a new one from advanced, has a warranty, so if it is the valve seals, we can address it.
how do we check on this to find out what the problem is????

need to verify that the head is the issue.
well, what do we have to do to check the head or track down the problem if that isn't the problem

Take the intake manifold off. If there is oil on your valves, intake port, and the first couple inches of the manifold, its the valve seals or guides. It happend to me on my car. Do you have a PVC system that goes from the intake manifold to the valve cover? That also might be bringing oil into you intake manifold. If you have that, check where the PVC enters the manifold and look for oil around that area. Just some ideas.

Oil pressure sensor went bad on my FD, and she started eating oil like candy. Couldn't see there was a leak until it got really fried. Just a thought.

Wait, are you sure you put oil in it before you ran it? LOL....J/K.
If its leaking from the exhaust valve guides or seals it would be very sooty and thick with build up in the ports. If its not in your coolant, and its not leaking to the outside, the only other place is you burning it. The smoke on start-up is a VERY good indication its the valve seals or guides.

One of my buds was getting black smoke from bad piston rings. He had just rebuilt his heads, too.

Black smoke is fuel. Blue smoke is oil. Sweet smelling white smoke is coolant. Blue-black hazing is often seen on high boost apps, when at wot. My guess is the valve seals/guides. You blew no blue the other day in Pekin, except at start-up. You were hazing a bit, but I would consider that normal.
