It just started on my '03 Evo. She's got just over 24K on the odo.

C'mon, it's not like I've ever BLOWN a shift into 5th for God's sake - wtf? I imagine it's out of warranty and that they'll gripe about doing it anyway, but...

She's running Royal Purple but have heard good things about Syncromesh - I'm ready to change it right this damn minute... just rolled her out of the garage and theres some kind of fluid leaking - looks like oil but don't know yet. If it's from the tran I guess that could be the problem

Shifting from 4th to 5th from around 3500 or higher grinds...

Oh, and SS clutch line already in when the new clutch went in.

Does It stop when you get her up to temp?

Nope, not at all - this is very warmed up ... first time it happened was on the way up to Cordova... the higher the rpm the nastier the grind ...

OK, so, that leak ain't oil.

My next question it seems ya just answered, spy... guess this goes back the clutch replacement.

She's still driveable. If I get time today I'll be takin' her in to find out what's gonna fix it. Oh, and get the fluid topped off, eh?

Not to be repetetive, but ... delightful ...

can you check to see where its leaking? with a car that new it should stick out like a sore thumb. If it is the tranny check where. fill plug, drain plug, maybe your axle seals got damaged in the removal.

did you bleed your clutch line after the SS line install? maybe you just need to retorque the line. hell it could be a million things.

It ain't the oil pan, I at least know that - that's on the passenger side.

The leak is directly in front of the driver's feet. Two housings come together with a number of bolts. Seems to be coming either from the bottom, lowest bolt but more likely it's collecting there from the fitment of the two pieces themselves... dunno if that helps you visualize or not. There's a drain plug (?) above that bolt but no evidence of leakage from it. With the new grind into 5th gear we're assuming it's all related at the moment.

Again, I had the clutch replaced, didn't do it myself. I'll take it to them ASAP, which, unfortunately, ain't soon enough for my taste but, hey, what can ya do? Work sucks and so far it's very driveable. I assume proper procedures were followed. I just hate crackin' it open again if it's the same location.

What does the oil smell like? Clutch fluid is usually clear in small quantities and doesn't have much of a smell to it. Tranny oil usually has a yellowish color to it and has a very strong smell.

Mystery seemingly solved:

I finally got time to take the car to be seen and was referred to B&M Transmission on Galena road. I called after picking up more fluids and was told he had time to look at it but not much time to do any repair today - fair enough when ya call a guy at 2:30pm, eh?

Car goes up, light goes on, verdict is a leak at the axle, I crap my pants, Bruce gets a pry bar. He pokes and levers it around on the axle and is able to pry it a bit out with accompanying fluid leak, then pries it back. I think it goes something along the lines of the axle being out of it's index and is now back in.

He cleans it down so I can see if it recurs. I'm still a bit speechless: "... you mean you think that's it?" He can't be positive but it could well be.

So, Coiled, perhaps it does have to do with hitting a swail alongside the road at high speed.

The next best oddest thing is that no more fluid was required as it was full AND that I've not ground shifting into fifth again - yet. I've been real gentle to it for the past 2 days and haven't had time to really try it out since Bruce touched it. But I will sometime tomorrow I'm sure, if not later tonight.

So I stopped by Mitsu to order the lower front fascia lip and price the intercooler and a couple of the pipes. Mitsu's REAL proud of their intercooler and crappy little pipes - to the tune of some $1200+. And here Buschur has an intercooler upgrade with lower pipe (no cutting no nothing and can use the stock upper piping) for $750 ... hmmmmmmmmmmmm...
