I've never heard anything about them being different so I'd say yes.
From my work on the auto 2g awd I had, the transfer case on it was different from a 2g stick, but 1g's were the same to my knowledge.

The 1G AWD auto T-cases are definately different then the 5sp AWD 1G T-cases as well.
I'm not sure on the actual gearing in the rear-ends though.

The gearing is different, so don't swap 'em. http://www.vfaq.com/index-main.html Try that link then scroll down to where you see gear ratios in the drivetrain sub-category. It shows the difference.

You can try sourcing a part number or just open the casing and counting the teeth on the pinion gear. I suppose either would work just as well.
