I am trying to buy this 91 eclipse gs-t off this kid in my town. he doesn't know squat about the car, it's completely stock (yay), and it's clean. only problem being it wouldn't start. he said last time he started it was a week ago and it just stopped running while it was warming up and he said it hasn't started since. it just goes click ugh (like the starter is trying to turn the bastard over. first thing i tried jumping it. (nothing) next troubleshot all elctrical ( biggthumpup.gif ), checked fuses, relays, etc... and still nothing. decided it must be starter. so i replaced the starter. still nothing. this baffeled me, so i went to the next biggest problem causing agent, the ecu. threw in a n/t i had laying around and as you can imagine it didn't do a god damn thing. so i'm here asking you the dsm gurus of the nation, any ideas? i think locked rear balance shaft? siezed motor/spun a bearing real bad. any help would be awesome, i really want the car, but i refuse to buy without hearing her run. dry.gif

is there oil in the motor? Sounds like she locked up if she won't turn at all.

Might want to check the power wire that goes to the starter. I've seen some where there is too much corrosion on the battery terminal (positive) and the actual starter motor wouldn't get power (solenoid would click but no starter action).

Also, you might want to unplug the clutch switch to make sure there isn't an issue there.

If the engine turns over, try the old push start. It will help you isolate it to be a starter vs. an engine problem.

Also, if it's sat for some time, starting fluid is your friend (won't affect the bad starter issue but will help the engine 'catch' and keep running when push starting).

ah, the dsm monger hard at work. I salute you spy in your tireless efforts to maintain a balanced ratio of running/not running vehicles.

You may already know this and checked it, but just to make sure the basics are covered. A very dead battery or bad battery connections will hinder attemps to jump start. clean battery connections and a fresh battery have cured many ails.

If the engine physically will not turn over though...no battery will help.

The first thing you should do is check to see if the starter is securly mounted on the block as well check the grounds to the starter and siliniod. After this clean the battery connections and have the battery tested. If the battery has bad cells it wont jump either. If this fails, Remove the drivers side front wheel and attemp to turn the motor over manually with a 1/2" drive buster bar, only turn the motor clockwise and remove the spark plugs because you will not be able to turn the motor if its compressing. If you cant turn the motor by hand it is very likely the motor is siezed or has extensive internal damage. If the motor turns over then attempt to push start the car, in order to distinguish between a electrical problem of starter problem. If the car push starts and stays running, its something still involving the starter or siliniod, but if it doesnt start or continue to run it could be many different electircal problems. In this case depending on your knowledge of the car you can either get out a volt and ohm meter or tow it somewhere were they can do a diognostic test. If the motor is blown it gives you the opportunity to get the car cheap and build it based on your expectations, either way you should consider investing in the car.

thx everyone for the help but after a few push start attempts, i deemed the motor to be seized because it locked up the tires pretty good at a 30mph pull start in 2nd gear lol biggrin.gif, and i need to sell my jeep before i can buy a dsm, so if anyones interested in a 92 cherokee 4.0 let me know.

Do you have any info or pictures of the Jeep?

no pics of jeep but i'll try by the weekend. in short its a 92 jeep cherokee laredo 4x4 with the High Output straight six. Truck has about 194k and wouldn't hesitate to drive it cross country tomorrow (if i had the gas $ wink.gif ). It is ready for winter, but could use new tires. has all power options and the "bullet proof" AW4 auto tranny shifts like new. 1800 obo or trade for a runnig turbo dsm. btw jeep is black and a 4 door, body is good except drivers front fender and a dent in driver door (i'm fixing the door myself)
