This guy i see at work all the time rants and raves about being a "street racer". He's in his late 20's early 30's. I asked him what he ran. He proceeded to glorify his Z71 Chevy that was putting down 320hp to the wheels. I didn't want to make fun of him ( even though i should have ) so i asked him what/who he raced. "rice burners" he said...."little imports with big tips"... he went on (again) to tell me about smoking some guy in a ford v8 triton. I think this guy needs to race the right people...so if anyone's up for some fun here's the truck's description
Z71 Chevy XT
All-Wheel Drive
454 with Headers
Custom Y-Pipe
Stock Muffler System (no glass paks or anything fancy)
2.25-2.50 exhaust (dual tips)
Green on Silver
Tinted Windows (with little stickers)
Nothing flashy
K&N Filter
No lift kit, custom rims or anything just stock
and he said something about his throttle body but whatever. 320 to the wheels
have fun guys

I think I'd be more worried if he was driving a diesel.... He might have 320 to the wheels, but he's also got 6000 pounds to lug around.... talk about a fatass...

my old boss has a new dodge cummings and a new deramax. Both have chips and exhaust. he's putting aluminum heads and bigger injectors in the deramax. both are pretty damn quick for being full size trucks.

rewire your fuel pump, do some logging runs, and turn up the boost and you'll beat him bad. a 14b will make you 250whp on your stock everything without that much work. I'll do some runs with you sometime if you want.
TotalEclipse97
Feb 8 2005, 04:07 PM
how do i rewire it? it a walbro 255 high pressure. also i've been getting, what seems like, fuel cut if i'm gunning it. it happened to me in 4th and it happened to Travis in 3rd. We turned down the boost to 13-15psi but i'm thinking i need bigger 'jectors. did you run 450's on the galant?

Feb 8 2005, 09:12 PM
When are you free to log that bitch? We can do some MAS hacking if nothing else. 16psi's probably about all we can get from a 14b, but will feel very nice properly leaned out.

Rewiring fuel pump on a 2G:
http://www.raktron.com/fuel/rewire1.htmlFuel cut is more prevalent in cold weather. Nevertheless, its strange for your 2G MAS to be fuel cutting at 15 psi on a 14b. There are guys out there running 16g's on 2G MAS and stock injectors at higher boost pressures w/o fuel cut. If you have been seeing a lot of knock your ECU may have lowered your "octane" value low enough that it is allowing less air before fuel cut.
Otherwise, you might want to crack open that ECU and check for leaky caps. My old fwd used to fuel cut like a bitch and it turned out to be from leaky caps on the ECU.
That's a beautiful 2G, btw!

I don't think it was fuel cut as far as the ECU pulling time due to too much air flow. I'd bet on a knock situation first personally as I can't see the 2.4/14B set-up pushing really being able to flow enough air to push a 2G MAF.
More of a 'not enough fuel' thing. I'm wondering if the 2.4 is able to swallow more fuel than the 450's are able to provide at 16psi on the 14B.
Not much other reason for knock on his set-up with a 14B. I'd feel better if it was being logged though when the symptoms were occurring to watch the ECU yank time via the logger though.

Feb 9 2005, 10:32 AM
Ahh, so its not really fuel cut then. It may very well be a lean condition considering the volume increase of the 2.4.

I ran up to 15psi on 450s with my frank 3 and my stock galant ECU. That was with my horribly hacked MAS though. The logger will really tell all.
Nobody has mentioned it yet, but it could be spark blowout too. I've felt that and its very much like fuel cut.
If you want I can meet you in Bloomington some night with my logger. PM me, or give me a call. 208 7633

make sure it's not compressor surge either. From the things I've read a 2.4 can turn a 14b right out of it's bearings on exhaust volume alone. Depending on the exact problem the turbo may just be too small.

I havn't had the (what felt like fuel cut) lean condition problem since we lowered to psi to 13-15...but i havn't floored the junk out of it either....i guess i'm kinda scared of what kind damage i'd be doing to my car.
Hey does any know where i could find a bigger smic. i saw acouple online that a guy took 2 stock ones and welded 'em together and rigged it up and he said it was performing almost as well as a fmic. any suggestions?

I understand pride. I have more than most. Therefor I understand being proud of your ride. But IF you talk like it is said, you are in need of an education. I'm not saying you are not an experienced street racer, nor do I doubt you in any specific way. However, you do need to realize the performance potential of this particular type of car. I'll never say that you should fear a fart-canned Civic in your Z71, but a lot of DSMs will hand you your ass in a Vette. Been there, done that. Be proud, because without pride there is no drive to compete. But don't be closed-minded and ignorant. You'll just lose. I'm truly not trying to be negative or instigate, more like a heads-up.
Welcome to the site. You should check out some races sometime! You ever seen a daily driven import spin it's tires past 100mph? It's a good time.

Feb 11 2005, 07:29 AM
Actually, I think the more people who don't know the potential of DSM's, the better. The way it used to be. Some old 80's Camaro driver would take one look at my car and put in the same category as a fart-piped the car that we shall not name Civic until I handed him his ass.

Hehehe, there's no greater feeling then making one of those guys drop his jaw.

"How'd that little rice POS beat my 'Maro?" "Damn, that's a quick little car!" It's the funniest expression I see on other drivers.

That is exactly what it felt like. Right before i shifted it just "klunked out" (if that's a word). It didn't stall the car ...it was as if the engine just said "enough" for about .005 secs

If ya hand a camaro it's ass , it's just that a" camaro"! If ya tempt it with a well built Z28 or at that sleeper camaro , you might want to respect !! I should Know first hand ,I had an 80 Z28 that ran mid 10's in a 1/4 . But that was back in late 89 -92.
If I had a chance to do the same car again I would! Don't under estimate the other car until its all siad and done! Good luck and be safe!

No, I've taken out a whole array of Z28s and other worthy V8 cars. It's hard for an NA to match the pull of a turbo on the top end. A Vette has been the only thing I've come across on the street that's given me a good challenge. I'm not saying the DSM is untouchable by any means, but it's funny to me that you have to soup up a V-8 to compete with a stock 4 banger. And I'm not into comparing my daily driver to a fully built drag car. That's not apples for apples.
grimy4
Feb 13 2005, 08:25 AM
Are you sure that the Z28's and other V8's were worthy or up to the task?
Some guys have a tendency to think that some exhuast work makes a difference
with the V8. My moto with V8 cars and trucks is " Does it run as good as it sounds?" This is the exact reason for the mods to my fullsize truck! I do believe that a four banger can out run alot of v8 cars. Many years ago ,back in my late teens,I built a screamin little 1.9 four bager . I was stuned by how well it performed. Porting, polishing, cam, intake, carb, exhuast, tranny, clutch, 4.11 factory gears. With this tight lillte set up ,I put a major hurtin on a lot of my friends that had small blocks and big blocks. So with that in mind anything is possible in my eyes! By the way that car was built kinda as a joke . But with the rep that my older brother had before he passed away, I had to follow in his footsteps when it came to biulding cars! If ya ever talk to some guys that ran Mahomet back in the 80's they would Know who this person is . To sum this up ! Anything is possible ! I am very impressed with what has evolved with the import scene. V8,V6,4 Banger, Turbo, non turbo, Its all good!! Enjoy what ya have, wish for what ya don't have yet !!

This is for Rinkle Wall, As far as what has been describedasmy truck, someone has mis communicated the info. Meaning the very first post! Yes my fullsize 4x4 is fast for what it is ! Yes I have done a lot to it ! Do I need educacted on the Import scene ? Im sure that some of these lil imports that I have smoked were possers!
I have smoked several other 2whl & 4whl trucks and have had fun doing it!!
The Import World is something that has sparked my intrest !! So to set it straight , YES, I do need educated, But in the possitive way!! Hands on ,or something close to that!! Have I seen a Imoprt spin tires at 100mph? NO ! I am curious of what the DSM Crew has to offer !! I have been a chevy man since i can remember! I started working on cars at 10 years old & now in my thirties. I have seen cars do tire shakes at 100 + mph. Lucky for me , my past car and current truck just keep pullin! I can say top end on my truck is above 140 mph! It can get a lil scarry above that due the floating syndrome !! I'm not a negative type of guy , so to knock Imports , I will not !! Respect them I will !! But as anybody would say
"Respct is earned "!! You sound like a straight forward type of guy and I respect that!! And thankyou for the Welcome!!

I appreciate your kind words. I think it is awesome that you harbor no ill will towards the import crew, such open-mindedness is rare in a domestic-oriented person. As for your relative need of a hands-on education, trust me, there is much to be learned on this site.
I have been working on these cars for about 8 years now, if you have any questions, feel free to ask. If I cannot answer, there are fifteen others who likely can. You really need to get a DSM, they're cheap and plentiful. If you're located in C/U, you may see quite a bit of me this season, as KOU Motorsports has been so good as to sponsor my efforts this season, and I'll be in Tolono quite a bit. You should come out to the shop and check it out.

To keep up the second discussion in this thread... I was getting spark blowout after running too lean and melting the plugs pretty severly. With a gap so large you could not even measure it the spark was blowing out at around 4k. Lesson learned about AFR...

pardon me for not reading the entire thread, but is this truck Red? I remember going at it a while back with a red chevy that had "so sweet, cant be beat on the back window", it was fullsize single cab. This was right after i had gotten the turbo upgrade, and everything was still way out of tune, but we messed around a bit on neil. Once the turbo got spooling I caught up with him, but down low my car just couldnt muster anything up. It was surprisingly fast, but by no means was my car a "fast" dsm, especially in those days.
Just thought i'd post for once in my life. Cya round boys, Still lookin for a new ride, but in no hurry.

My truck is green over silver ex-cab 4x4 . He is right I work for a local bottling company , delivering pop! I'm sure some of you guys from C/U have seen me around and working ! I'm not sure who it is in the red Chevy truck ! If I get a chance at him I'll give him a good run! That is just for kicks ofcourse !
Don't mean to be rude or anything Haunter, but I don't want to give up info like that on a site that anybody can read ! Ya know ! Incriminate myself ! not to offend anyone!! But my job depends on me to drive for a living.

She loves to ride in my truck , so if I don't play, don't be disappointed ! If ya do see me in that situation at least let yourself be known ! Oh one other thing my lil girl can cut a mean street tree!!
