I'm looking at a 91 awd eagle talon with strange oil pressure. Oil pressure is very low at idle but when you give it some gas it will go to the first of two lines and stay there. Is there a problem if so any idea's to what the problem is.

Thanks James

how low is very low? in the , middle of the left end of guage and first line? or worse? because my 90 has been playing around from there to about the middle of the two lines for about the past two months and it seems fine. But to answer your question more directly, that low of pressure is not a good sign of whats to come, ensure that under heavy throttle it doesnt burn oil, as well as at a duration of idling. the first is a sign of worn or seized rings or other lowerend cylinder related issues. the second being more commonly an issue of upper end wear (ie bad valve seals). either issues not something you want to jump into unless you plan on doing a teardown right off the bat. however it could be a tired oil pump and a simple replacement is in order. how many miles on car(engine)?

at idle it was halfway between the first line and no pressure when you get on it it would just barely pass the first line on the oil pressure gauge (i dont know if it matters the but the first line is in the middle of the gauge and the next line is a little more than halfway to the max oil pressure, it just seems wierd to me that the gauge would be off set like that )

i also wuld like to know if an automatic to manual swap is posible

That is normal for a DSM. Check and make sure the oil level is OK, but low at idle is normal.

Yes, the trans swap is possible, but you need a lot of parts. The rear ends are different, so you'll need a tranny, clutch, flywheel, all the clutch hydraulics, complete rear end, etc.

my car does the same thing... i wouldn't worry about it. like he said just check your oil level every few days because it probably leaks like every other DSM smile.gif.

another difference between the auto and manuel is the turbo and the injectors. the auto has a 13g and the 5speed has a larger 14b turbo. also the auto has 390cc injectors vs the 5speed bluetop 450's.

stock dsm oil pressure gauges are historically inaccurate and vary widely. Though low pressure isn't really a great sign, I wouldn't rush off to the machine shop either. Unless the low oil light is on, I'd take it for a grain of salt.

agreed. if you feel necessary purchase a cheap mechanical oil pressure guage (ie sunpro) and see where it puts you. btw what everyone forgot was the little stuff with auto to 5speed swap. (the annoying changes) the pedal assemblies/ clutch cables, shifter linkages and assemblies as well as master cylinder, and in some cases t-cases, depending on choosen spline count for trans (22 or 23). in my opinion keep searching. you can find the all wheel 5 speeds posted here and on the dsmtrader.com for sale, i honestly would have a 5speed fwd over a auto awd.
