I'd like to get a cheap welder this year to play around with. I don't need it to weld frames etc, I just want something to learn with and weld up light gauge boxes, lower intercooler piping etc.
Anybody ever use one of the Harbour Freight Specials:

I have one of those I'll sell you if you really want one.
They're not good for production quality welds, and they spatter a lot, but if you just want something to toy with, they're fine. I made my exhaust with the one I have. And my uicp.
I would recommend against it, if you plan on doing serious welding in the future, they simply don't lay clean beads.

buying a welder was one of the best things I did for my car. Seriously. You'll have a blast.
