I didnt want to jack mitsu 90's thread, but im in the process of having my motor rebuilt and i did the pulling myself. Well when i pulled my transfer case, i didnt bother to drain it (i was just being lazy) and just unbolted it. I went by a Vfaq on doing so and they said to be careful about tipping it or you will spill trans case oil all over you, well i did tip it ( well tip, rolled and everything else) and didnt spill a drop, well after seeing a few threads on here, i decided to unbolt the drain plug for kicks and giggles, but to my surprise there was no fluid that came out, not one drop. So im guessing this is what the recall is supposed to cover? I do have paperwork from the previous owners and there is a paper showing it was checked quite a few years ago and everything was ok. So my questions is what should i do about it? I have no idea how long it was going like that, but it never howled, whined or made any grinding noises. So to avoid the hassle, should i just replace the seal (shouldnt be to expensive) myself and just go with it. Take it to the dealer and hassle with them to try to get it replaced?, or wait till my motors done, slap it all back together, and then take it in?, or just replace the whole unit if someone has one? Im really dont know if its worth fooling with the dealer if i can just put a new seal on it myself and go with it, or should i not take my chances there has been damage done to it and just replace it to be safe? Will a dealer honor the warrenty if its already pulled, or do i have to have it on the car itself and take it in that way?

also should a chrysler (20 miles away) dealer still cover my car even though its a mitsu eclipse? or do i have to take it to the mitsu dealer (about 100 miles away) itself?

This is from my own personal experience and yours may be different than mine.

When I had mine done (an Eagle Talon) the Mitsubishi dealership would not honor my car as a Mitsubishi. I had to go down the road to the Chrysler Jeep Eagle dealer and talk to them. Keep in mind, all I had was the transfer case, the car was in pieces at the machine shop. I took it in and they said they couldn't do anything because they didnt' have the whole car and that determines if they replace the whole thing or just replace the seal. They didnt' care that mine didn't have one drop in it or that there was a stack of built-up metal on the drain plug magnet. Now, here's where the tough part comes in. You literally have to make a scene to get anything done. Start yelling, kicking and screaming to get them motivated. After a little of this childish display of anger, they were willing to cooperate. Be sure to take your VIN number with you to if you go with my route. Otherwise, your only other option is to let them work on your car.

Historically, I think turbohcar's solution has worked the best at getting parts replaced. The recall is supposed to be a lifetime thing, and just because it wasn't leaking a while back, doesn't mean that it shouldn't be covered now. Convincing a dealer of that may be a trick though.

I'd check for metal shavings on the plug, similar to what tubohcar decribed. If it looks clean, you can probably get away by replacing the seal (I think it's only about $10). Make sure that you check the fluid often in that thing though!!

If you decide that you want to just buy a used one, I've got two sitting in my garage for a 90 (22 spline). You're choice, $50. I'd suggest replacing the seal on either of these, as I don't know if the recall was ever done on them.

well if I had to do it all over I would skip the dealer, my TC is leaking and they wont do a thing because they claim its not.

Well for that money i may just take care of it myself. Mines got 180,000 on it and i dont know how long its been driven dry like that. Id rather not take a chance and have it lock up on my rebuilt motor when i get it back.

Rob, do you know the mileage on the two you have? I will be in bloomington within a month to pick my motor up from Ryan, so i might just pick one of yours up, i will hit you up later and see if you have them available still. Thanks
