It's about your best shot. I can't help you but maybe they can.

Autozone or Advance usually let you check codes for free with their Diagnostic Tools.

I am going to say no power to the shift solenoids. There are two of them, Solenoid A and Solenoid B. The gears as selected as follows (+ means power, - no power):

1st A+ B+
2nd A- B+
3rd A- B-
4th A+ B-

As you can see if both solenoids went out or you have lost a signal to the solenoids you would be stuck in 3rd...

It's a tcu issue. When the tcu failes, it goes into limp mode. You can pull the tcu out and it'll act the same. Check it for rancid smell ie caps leaking. If it's already in limp mode, odds are the tcu is toast and you have to buy a new one. If you're near bloomington, I can recap it for you as I've recapped 3 tcus this year to see if it'll work. Otherwise, you can buy a new one and I could recap that for you as well.

how much would that cost?
badbu68
Either provide me the capaciters and I'll do the tcu or give me $20 for capaciters and I'll replace both the tcu and ecu caps for you.

But you'll probably need to replace that tcu. I can try and replace the caps in your current one, but it probably won't work. Check out www.car-parts.com for a junkyard tcu. Get one of those, check to make sure it works and I'll recap it for you.
natedogg
No offense, but those caps don't cost anywhere near $20. Are you charging for labor or caps here?
badbu68
That was to order caps for both the tcu and ecu from digikey wich shipping alone is $13 and to replace them. I'd make in effect, $3 (wich I would be using to pay for more caps from them). The offer was to replace them as well if he was willing to supply the caps (without me ordering them).

That's www.car-part.com

I don't show any that are anywhere near here though. It'd probably be in the $175-200 range if I could get a good one in though. I'd look for a parts car around here. I know that Armando at Armando's Tire and Service here in Bloomington is looking to convert his AWD Auto to a manual so you might tell him you'll give him $20 for it.

His phone number is 309-452-4399. Just tell him you're interested in buying a part for the automatic transmission off of his 91 Talon and that Brett at Bill Smith Auto Parts told you he was wanting to do a manual trans swap.

www.car-parts.com redirects to the same site. And just as a side note and not to get off on a tangent, but I actually don't mind helping people out with stuff like this FOR FREE. I'm an enthusiast not a business, but it seems that everyone is trying to make a buck, even other enthusiasts. I just wanted a few extra caps, not looking to make quick $$$ for the hour that it would take to resolder those.

That is all,

PEACE OUT! biggthumpup.gif

how do I know what ones I need?

well this moring the car shifted fine, but after work it was back in limp mode. I stopped at a red light shut the car off restarted it and it shifted fine again blink.gif so either I have a loose plug or my TCU is on it's last leg.

thats a little pricey for a used one they are $180 new from autozone
turbohcar
^^^I know it's pricey but, I can't make other vendors change their price ya know. If I had one in my yard, it would be a different story but I can't make them change their price on it.
