As some of you know my car seems to be having chronic overheating problems. Last weekend Rob and I were working late into the evening to get the car finished. When we pulled the drivers side wheel off there was another problem waiting to be fixed. It seems that being the moron I am, I forgot to attatch the drivers side brake line bracket to the strut. That bracket was hanging down and actually cut the boot open on the axle shaft cv joint. Grease was everywhere. Inside my wheel, on the strut, and some on the fender liner.

To the point, Autozone claims they have a whole new axle shaft in stock for $60 plus a $50 core charge. Is it worth it to buy the whole new axle or should I just own up and try to find a boot for it and drive it as-is for right now? I just want this darn thing to drive!

Any leads to replacement cv boot companies would be helpful.

Autozone will also sell you a replacement CV boot as well as the grease to fill it with, but its such a pain in the ass to deal with, I'd just replace the axle. Spend a little more money for a lot less hassle.

^What I was thinking. I saw the V-Faq on it. I'm not sure I want to deal with that much crap just to fix a boot when I can buy a new one for $60 and be done with it tonight.

You better just do it the easy way, Like Nate said. Replace it and be done with it. You never know what YOU might damage trying to put on a boot ! Just had to give you some shit .
Yeah replacing the boot is a pain. I would not recommend it to any one. Spend the money tight wad .

BTW Brett... might not hurt to grab your impact to get that spindle nut off. I've never been able to get mine to break anything like that loose.

Picked up the axle a couple minutes ago and it looks like we'll have to seperate the axle from the carrier bearing (it's the drivers side). Don't know how hard that is but I guess we'll find out.

Never done that before... cool! we get to learn together!!

I've seen some that separate with a little muscle. Others (mine ), require the delicate touch of an air hammer.

I fourth the opinion, replace it, don't mess with the boot.

Ask MasterHondaBuilder about that one, he was trying to get a boot on a Civic for 9 hours last year on a buddy of mines car.

Boot is done, car drives.....OK. Still overheating a bit I think. Car idles at proper temp, drives and gets a bit hot then cools back down. Good thing is it's not loosing coolant anymore!

Need to get that logger working so you can watch exactly what it's doing. I think the cooling system is functioning ok (since it's all new! ) but there may be other problems... As cool at it was last night, it wouldn't surprise me to be cycling a bit though. That stock gauge may be off slightly also.

Yeah the cold weather is playing havoc with mine. If I don't let the car run for 4-5 min before I leave for work in the morning, it doesn't reach normal operating temp until I get to Peoria (20min drive)
