I was wanting to know what the balance shafts were for, what is there purpose? If I remove them what will I gain? And how hard is this to do?

I have a spare block that I can use as a ginny pig. But I was wanting to know more what they are for and what are my gains? Thanks guys!

They are used to balance out engine vibrations. Most people that have rebuilds usually have them removed. You really dont gain much except you dont have to worry about breaking the belt and getting it caught in your timing belt. They say it removed some rotating mass from the engine, so you could arguably say it helps you rev faster. I can feel a bit more engine vibration with mine, but its tolerable.

Yup, Ive got mine removed too, I didnt notice a whole lot of a difference in vibration. I suppose if you have motor mount inserts you would probably notice it a little more

I didnt notice much more vibration when i took mine out.

by removing them you gain about 5 lbs of rotating mass off the timing belt which allows quicker revs and a longer power band. You can usually feel a slight difference when you remove them but its only enough to really bother old women.

Mine are out. I can't tell a difference at all.

The old thing I always heard was 2hp/lb of rotating mass removed. Since the balance shafts turn at double speed its suposed to be closer to 3hp/lb. I've never seen a dyno sheet to back that up though
