I have the motor/tranny combo swining out in the garage right now but before I start cranking it out of the engine bay I wanted to check something. A while back I helped my brother pull the motor out of a n/a 1G. I am pretty sure we were able to lift the engine up and get the half shafts to pull free. Is this the case? Should I remove the half shafts first? BTW, this is a FWD auto.

Just in case anyone runs across this post in the future the answer is sort of. I had to disconnect the upper arm on the drivers side and the brake line to get enough play in the axle and get it removed. I am sure that the brake line was not necessary but seemed the easiest at the time. Once that was out I loosened up the axle on the passenger side and it came right out as I was lifting the engine out.
