Hey i recently bought my brother's black eclipse gs-t. It hasnt been driven in 2 years and this week i bought it and am in the process of resurrecting it. The main problem is an annoying noise coming the power steering pump or even worse the rack and pinion. I'm so used to driving the car it's hard to tell if there is any power steering at all, but it makes a uuuuurrrrrrrr noise when i am taking turns. At idle, you can usually hear what sounds like the power steering pump making a stupid sound. DOES anyone have ANY comments or thoughts about this?? please post about it if you think you know whats up, or if you have had a similar problem and know how much it costed to fix!! Thanks

Take off the power steering belt. If the noise goes away, then its the PS pump. For a car that's been sitting for two years, that's not much of a problem.

have you checked the fluid level?

Reading your mods...it's sound like your "virgin DSM" was raped by a speed shop!

If it's been sitting that long, make sure change all the fluids and get ready for some leaking seals.

Yes i have checked the fluids..doesnt seem to be leaking any fluid..plus i put that syrup stop leak stuff in the resorvoir just in case..

If i were to take the ps belt off..i would have to take the alternator belt and pulleys off to even get to the ps belt..so i was goin to take the car into a local shop monday so they can check the pump for pressure *for Free..*

and yeah haha i guess its just a virgin when it's compared to it's potential...

"syrup stop leak" can sometime cause noise in the pump, especially when its cold.

But it was making the noise looong before i put that stuff in it..maybe its adding to the noise? its basically just gonna suck when i'll prob have to put a new steering rack in it...

I totally agree. Mr. Kicks and I were discussing something similar last night. I'm going to run my car without power steering OR a steering wheel. That shit robs horse, bud. Just some fishing line and a rudder is all I need.

I dont mind not having power steering. It isnt all that hard to turn.

I swapped in a manual rack too. I'd rather I had not made the effort all things considered. It makes the car feel so heavy.

what do you mean manual rack? you mean replaced the steering rack and left the pump off?

Manual rack out of a 1.8 powered DSM.

I wouldn't just take the pump off and cap the existing power steering rack unless you want a serious workout. Definately not recommended.

well hopefully ill find out exactly what it is this week..but if its the rack then im just goin to have a shop do it..a brand new steering rack from autozone is like $262 plus crazy labor so it would be magnificent if it was just the pump and alignment..

ALRIGHT.... making some progress...apparently inside the power steering pump was a valve that was jammed up, so Raisors flushed it all out and the steering wheel actually turns like a real car..and that was only 60 bucks..Now i have to get alignment since the wheel is still like 90degrees turned when going straight..although when i am driving around...sometimes theres a Clunk clunk noise..im guessing its when i go over bumps or holes in the road and i was wondering if any of YOU knew if it would be related to the alignment/steering OR ..upper ball joints going bad from being lowered so much... LET ME KNOW WHAT U THINK !

Jack the car up, grab the top and bottom of the rim and try to rock it. If its loose=ball joints.

Check the tie rod end also. The wifes car was making a clunk noise, I blew it off for a while. When I finally checked it, the tie rod was so wasted the tire moved about 1/4" . Not cool!!
