Has anyone ever heard of or tried cutting the rear balance shaft off instead of replacing the shaft? Got to looking at it, and it seems like it would work, but maybe someone has more info than I on the topic.

I've heard that people have done that with good results. You might have to cut a couple of grooves into either side of the part you are going to use so you can get a wrench on it to tighten the oil pump driven gear bolt and the sprocket nut.

The shaft is $9 for JNZ...not sure it's worth the effort.

I pretty sure I saw a web page on modifing the stock shaft like you describe, I'll try to find it tonight.

EDIT***like ncgalant below, I got mine from JNZ. It's a stock Mitsu part off a Galant, should be any problems.

That is exactly what I do, cut it off flush with the pump and tig weld the oil passage shut.
