Hey guys, whats going on? I have a question. My 90 GS-T as well as everyone elses has an extremely long shifter throw. Although it is butter smooth, I am **absolutely feigning** a short throw shifter. I dont mind cutting the rod, and a different knob will help as well but I want something that just goes from gear to gear with the 'flick of the wrist.'

I know ebay sells short shifters but im not quite sure if they work. I have heard that they work with some modification, but im not sure how much is involved and im not quite sure even if they work at all! If I can verify that the ebay shifter does work, then I am ready to buy one at a moments notice.

Does anyone else have any other suggestions? Thanks

Nomie, it sounds like you already know this, but I see you still want easy shifting.

I have no reference for theE-bay shiters. Unless someone has a special design utilizing the small amount of space under a DSM center console you are going to find more force is needed when you reduce your leverage with a shorter shifter. It's not impossible, but it will not be as easy as it is with the stock length shifter. I for one am willing to accept the greater force required to shift with a shorter throw.

In my case though, I'm just using a very short weighted shift knob on the stock 92 shifter and no rubber bushings throught the shifter mechanism to take up any extra slack. Like butter, no - exact and quick with force, yes.

Hey Marcus, after doing a few hours worth of research, Ive come to the conclusion that Im going to relocate the shifter cable on the transmission along with adding the shifter plate bushings in the console combined with a nice weighted shift knob will satisy my desire for crisper shifting.

Ill keep you guys updated on my quest for a better shifting experince..

Marcus, care to elaborate on exactly which/where/how many rubber bushings can be replaced? I would love to get rid of every rubber bushing in my mechanism as well.

It has a braided line.
bearings for under the hood.
and the inside kit also.

I will go to the garage and get a pic for you.

I also have the extended push rod.

In a way I have everything Budman has listed there with the addition of washers added to the shifter cable mount on the transmission as well. The small washers take up the extra room in the bracket designed for rubber mounts while retaining the stock bolts.

An to be totally honest I am using no bushings on the shifter base. It's just bolted directly to the floor.

Budman's kit is very cheap though.

BudmannG, I already have a stainless clutch line as well as the extended slave cylinder rod. But I will be more than happy to take the underhood tranny bushings and the console bushings as well. Shoot me a price either right here or you can PM me as well. Ill be waiting..

If he'll take those parts Ill take the stainless steel clutch line so you'll still sell all of the "kit"

not sure about the ones you will find on ebay.... but I did install a pacesetter short throw on the GSX... ordered it from Sumitt (or jegs... can't remember). the install wasn't that bad... basicly you take the rod wheer the shifter knob screws on and the one that bolts to it off of your current assembly.... then bolt on your shorter arms

the results were better than expected seeing as pace setter accually moved the pivot point some as opposed to just chopping down a stock shifter....

like kicks said though... you will lose the shifting like butter feeling.... but with a little extra force a flick of the wrist is all that it takes to grab the next gear.

Does the pacesetter come with bumpstops so the forks are not harmed? I found another option as well

accually the pacesetter uses the stock bottom mounting plate so all of the stops that come mounted to that are reused....

Im using the Fidanza and it's alright....Short throws but, I dunno...There's probably better and smoother...

Hey guys, courtesy of Bud, I just received my shifter bushings and Im psyched to install them but I have a few questions and concerns.

I was reading the shifter rebuild VFAQ and I was wasn't sure if the first part of the rebuild is actually the same thing as installing the plate bushings w/out the bushings. So is that what they really do? Just get rid of the washers and install the shifter base directly?

Secondly, who is in favor of the second part of the shifter rebuild? Installing the nylon/washer to take up some free play in the shifter? Who has had success with it? I am pretty happy with my shifter right now(stock 90) and I dont want to tamper with anything good. But if this will make it better, then hey why not!

most of your extra long throw comes from the stock excecivly long shift knob i put a tenzo R wieghted shift knob on my 92 gsx. even though it isn't extreamly short, but still shorter. and not requiring much more force to shift good for everyday driving and hard driving situations.
