This may be a stupid question but does anybody have any tricks to getting to the bolts underneath the manifold? I must be looking at it wrong or trying it from the wrong angle but I cant seem to get to them. Thanks in advance for the help, and feel free to call me a dumb ass

Guess that I can't be much help because the two times that I have had the intake mani out of the car it was still attached to the head. It would think that you could get them from under the car. I would guess that you have tried that though...

When I've done it on a 1G I was able to access the bolts from the passenger side by removing the battery, throttle body, piping and etc. You are working on them blind but you should be able to reach them all.

You should be able to get to them from underneath, as long as your arm is skinny. I think the driver side axle block easy access.

On a 2G I always remove the battery tray and mount, as well as the A/C compressor and then I can snake my arm around the bottom of the intake to get out those four bolts. It's a pinch but it's do-able, even with my sausage link arms and fingers.

I've used the universal sockets with good results gives you a LOT of leeway as far as wrench angles and such. Make sure it's a universal socket and not just a universal attached to a socket, cause that's too bulky to fit against the manifold flange.

I got it off yesterday. I ended up taking out the battery and tray and also removing the starter because that damn thing was just getting in the way. Damn I am getting sick of working on this car. Nothing ever goes as easy as it should But that's what I get for owning a DSM I guess

I think I found out what may have been plagueing my car (one of the main things anyway) since I got it back. I will post pics as soon as I can find my cable.

Was I right about half the gasket being gone?

same thing happend to mine with the half gasket on the intake manifold. to get mine off i took the intake and throttle body off.

This is what I saw when I removed the intake





I looked at the head and seen that the whole gasket was there but when I put it up to the intake




It has a 2G head and a 1G intake manifold and he used a 2G gasket, and by the condition of the gasket it appears to be the one that was already on the car. Which begs the question what happend to the brand new 1G gasket I had in the car and told him to use.

Well hopefully when I get it put back together I will have no more leaks and a good running car.
