Full Version: Hints for EPROM ECU Hunting?

Alright, I've been searching EBAY, etc for good deals on a EPROM ECU.

Have a few questions:
Do you have to get a ECU for the same exact car? For example, mine's a 1G AWD 5 spd, will a 1G FWD 5sp work?

AUTO ecu's won't work for manual cars, correct?

As long as its for a manual tranny and its 1G to 1G car or 2G to 2G car, you'll be good to go. AWD/FWD doesn't matter.

Keep your eye on Ebay or contact Keydiver. I bought mine from him on Ebay just by freak chance. He gave me a 1yr warranty with it and a discount on chips too. But, I did pay a premium for it so be aware ($240 shipped).

Thanks guys!

And a 90 will work in a 91-94 by swapping a couple of pin in the harness, correct?

Does a Federal ECU make a difference, I assume that's more "emisions" stringent ECU??
The Iron Goat
The Federal ECU is the one most widely used in the states. The Cali model will be the more "toned-down" item for emissions reasons.

Get your ECU swappin skills up to NASCAR pit crew speed and start lookin for a test drive candidate ph34r.gif

you can also use a ECU out of a GVR4 you just need to swap the cases around. I don't see why a auto ECU wouldn't work, once you have a chip burnt it shouldn't matter what it came from.

An auto ECU will throw a code if it can't talk to an active TCU. It also has completely different fuel and timing maps due to the different injector and turbo sizes. Burning the a chip will help but won't get rid of all the issues. It is much less of a headache to use an ECU out of a manual for a manual car.

this is all really good stuff... we may have to archive this one for future reference

An auto ECU will NOT throw a code if you put a manual EPROM chip in it.
natedogg
The one I tried in my car did.
mitsu90
the ECU that was in Adams laser when nate bought it was an auto ECU and as far as i know it NEVER threw a code.

I'm not trying argue with you. All I am going off of is my own experience.

dragging up an old thread for more info biggrin.gif

So a Cali model would not be desirable? What parameters would be "toned down"? Would those parameters be able to be tweaked with a tuned replacment eprom?
Chicago_DSM
I could see that b/c Cali cars were always specific tuned for emissions....

I still dont know if my eprom is for an auto/year etc, I just made sure the ecu was 91+ before I bought it....

I figured that since my custom chip is burned for the larger injectors anyway, it wouldnt make a difference that an auto ecu is set for 390's or whatnot

This is all good info for the archive. Thanks guys.

I finally did get a eprom from jvb6806. The hunt is finally over! biggthumpup.gif

It is already socketed and includes a chip. the chip is burned for 560cc injectors, 8k redline, and 6k rpm launch limiter, and fuel cutoff deleted. My setup has 550's but I figured I'd use the translator to do the final tuning. The 6K launch limiter is a little high, but I'll give it a try. biggrin.gif

my old chip had a 5k launch limiter but with my new clutch and flywheel setup i bumped it to 6k. i have an exedy 3 puck and fidanza 8lbs flywheel.

Yeah, I'm probalbly going to need a new chip burnt eventually. I've got a ACT 2600 and normally try to leave around 5200.

Long time no talk! You still have a laser? I thought you had a Suby now or something?

Ha, and I shouldve bought your old eprom chip back in the day....I now run a eprom with a custom chip similar to the one you had (560's, studderbox, 2g mas )

Hey black_92....Youde be surprised with the damage you do with a 5000rpm limiter.....I build 10psi in just a second and did consistent 1.7 60's on a stock clutch, with a grabbier clutch it for sure would've been 1.6's all day....This was with a good amount of spin thru 1st as well....

Chicago, that sounds really good! Lower ET's is always nice!

I'm really looking to improve consistency. I want to run the QuarterMaster series at Cordova this year, so I'm looking to get consistent launches.
