Full Version: MAF Translator?

Kris, or Nate? I believe one of you two had this unit? How do ya'll like it? Any known negatives so far?
akamiami
I like mine great. I've got it in blow through setup. For those that haven't seen, here's a pic of my current setup. I like it just for the fact that I can vent and it cleans up the intake quite a bit as well as hastening spool.

Nate has done more tuning than I have so far, though I suspect his big FMIC will throw off the settings a bit. I'm eager to get my bushing and brake job complete so I can get this tub on the road and tuned for speed.

Don't you worry about oil or other nasty shit coming from the turbo getting in there and fouling the readings? I'm starting to think that my rear turbo is oiling my intake system, I always have a lil bit in the IC pipe coming off it. That would be my main worry.
akamiami
nope, that doesn't worry me. These maf's are dirt cheap and my turbo doesn't leak oil.

My first impressions of it are good. I enjoy the much quicker spoolup and the fuel control capabilities. I have done some tuning with it, however, I'm not finished yet. I'm in the middle of a FMIC install right now, but as soon as I'm finished I plan on some serious tuning. My goal is to be able to boost 20 psi on my 16G on pump gas and keeping my knock below 15 counts. We'll see if that's attainable or not. If the translator turns out not to be all its cracked up to be, believe me, I'll be the first to tell you. Right now things are looking pretty good, though.

BTW, the logger helps a bunch when tuning with the translator.

Kris, you had an SAFC right? Did you uninstall it to use the MAF trans. application, or is it still installed. I think it also had the option to change from Karman type sensor to speed density didn't it?
akamiami
Yes, the SAFC can be used in tandem with the MAF, though you wouldn't need to change from Karman to Speed Density if you keep the SAFC mounted in the car and the MAFT up by the sensor.

However, I just ditched the SAFC and am fully confident that I can tune the car in with the MAFT alone.

Have you done any tuning yet? Do you use the pocketlogger? I'm thinking that if I get this unit then I will have to go back up to the awd dyno. I read that it only has 5% increments. Do you feel that this will be enough?

Sorry for all the annoying questions, I just want to make sure that this is worth the money.

I tuned my car a few nights ago down to a max knock count of 7 at a boost pressure that starts at 16 and creeps to 20 at the end of every gear. This puts my injector duty cycle at about 86% max. at a base fuel pressure with (the vacuum line connected to the AFPR) at 38 psi. I expect my boost pressure to creep less in warmer weather, so I can set my boost to a steady 20 psi and hopefully see knock counts below 15.

I also had a SAFC and sold it as soon as I bought the translator. I'm glad I did, because tuning with the translator was very easy. No need for the SAFC. To me it would just add unneeded complexity. If you do decide to keep the SAFC for fine tuning it can be used in either the Karman Vortex mode (if it reads after the translator and before the ECU) or Hotwire mode (if it reads after the GM MAF and before the translator). I haven't heard of anyone posting any results from doing this yet.

Final verdict on the translator is....outstanding! You can't beat it for the money. It gives you all the tuning and airflow capabilities of a VPC at a fifth of the cost.

Just to clarify...this tuning was done on 650cc injectors, 255 lph fuel pump, fuel pressure regulated by a CAS AFPR, 16G turbo, CAS FMIC, and pump gas in 30 to 40 degree weather.

It feels like a mid to low 12 second car now, but only the track can tell for sure. Hmmm...I wonder what race gas will allow. wink.gif

hey guys, i'm curious were you get these gm maf translator stuff? I'm looking for somthing to run on my car, I was thinking stand alone, (aem, whatever) I've never really heard of this Gm Maf conversion.
Is there a site I can check out?

I'm pretty new to the dsm's. I'm currently trying to put together a car now? and all the info I can get would be great.

I'm from bartonville, so I'll be seeing some of you guys around.

Hey Zach, welcome to DSMCentral!

You can find more information and purchase this product at www.ramchargers.com

I'm sure someone can point you to the DSMTalk thread as well. They've hashed and rehashed the subject for quite some time.

I saw this unit on a VR4 in STL and it was utilizing the 3.5" LS6 MAF. The guy said his 17G turbos now spool faster than his stock 9b's did with the OEM MAS in place. I think I'm sold on it. I may just hold out for an Autronic or AEM standalone.

This is probably the most informative thread right here.

There is also one on www.dsmtuners.com. Just do a search for translator.
