Full Version: 2g head on a 1g????

Don't ask me how, but somehow the head that I had rebuilt turned out to be a 2g head. I didn't even realize it until someone else pointed it out to me. My question - is this gonna cause problems? Will the CAS bolt up ok? I niticed how dramatically smaller the ports are, if I port them out will that be just as good as a 1g? Or should I be selling this head and looking for a good 1g head to put on? Will the ARP stud kit I have coming work with this head? Please somebody tell me that I'm not totaly f#$%ed....

And the saga continues... sad.gif

Rob-

Is this the head that I sold you?!? I pulled it straight out from under the hood of my '90. If it is please let me know ASAP and I'll have to get you your money back.

Well, as near as I can tell from the hour that I've spent researching here's how it breaks down....

2g head has smaller intake runners, a completely different waterneck and thermostat housing, CAS might work from a 1g, and the Cams have a shorter lift. unsure.gif

I'm really at a loss. I'm not sure I can sell this head and get my money back out of it, but I'm getting uneasy about trying to make it work on my motor. I'm about ready to go completely nuts from this project.

Help.... please.... sad.gif

When we did the 6 bolt swap in the 97GSX we kept the 2g head...We had a massive port and polish done on the 2g head and the cam thing...Well we have HKS 264's so that wasnt an issue. The cam angle sensor is hooked up ( thanks to Magnus Motorsports step by step on the swap) but we did notice differences in the valve train components so we got that all straightened out and now we dont have any problems with the head....

I looked closer at the two heads tonight and talked with another source. Turns out the water necks are different, but they bolt up the same. I should be able to use the stuff from the 1g. I'm gonna port the intake side out, and swap the cams and I should be good to go. Not an ideal situation, but perhaps not as bad as I first thought.

Anyone know offhand where I can find casting numbers on the block and head to find out what exactly is up with this motor? I sold the head to Rob after pulling it out of my '90 GSX. I'd assumed that everything was stock as it was an unmodified car. I'm wondering if someone dropped a cheap 7 bolt in at some point in its life now after I hear this from Rob. I really don't want to sell extra parts from it and disappoint another buyer. That and this little mystery is really bothering me. I honestly doubt either of the two previous owners would have had the know-how to even put on a head much less do a 7 bolt swap so I wonder if a shop located a cheap one at some point in the car's life.

Anyways if someone can tell me how I can shed some light on this I'd appreciate it. Sounds like more informed sources than I are pretty much sure that it IS a 2G head.

Sorry Rob didn't mean to add to your headache here. I'll do what I can to make things right.

I agree. Thanks Travis. smile.gif

I doubt the 7 bolt swap, just because of the complexity. I would be willing to bet that the car threw a timing belt in the past and the head was replaced by a newer one, without the realization that the newer ones are slightly different. Check out the VFAQ site for 6 bolt vs 7 bolt identification.

Ok at the risk of being stoned by Rob and his wife... wink.gif

I think that unless you are looking for low 11's Rob, this head will do. Sure it may not be AS efficient, but a set of 1G cams is easy to come by and I don't think the rest will make much difference.

Heck, after seeing the turbo off of an automatic 1G it would suprise me if the heads on those auto cars were smaller too. (I have no factual proof of that).

Either way, it really depends on your goals Rob. If you can get your money back and there are no hard feelings...cool. Especially on the basis that you thought you were getting a stock 1G turbo head. The 2G head is definitely worth something to people. Especially those that broke a timing belt and just want to get back up and running ASAP.

Either way I think you will be ok Rob...In my opinion this is not a life or death, nor the difference of 1-2 seconds in the quarter mile and especially not all the hair you've been pulling out over it.

Good luck...It's nice to see you guys working together on this issue so well!

I've pretty well come to the same conculusion Marcus, thanks for the level headed outside opinion. I've got a lot of other things to worry about before the head will be maxed out and really hurting me. I've got a couple sets of 1g cams laying around, no biggy there. A little time with a die grinder and ta-da...

I just hope I still have more hair than you when this is all done Marcus... laugh.gif j/k

Ouch but that's fair. I dropped the ball on you there. Again, I'm sorry. Doesn't change the frustration level but I ended up with a lot of stuff going wrong all at once and am still trying to straighten it all out.

Not my style but you don't have any reason to buy that so I'll leave you with an apology for falling off the face of the earth there.
