Ok heres my situation, i just boght a 92 Talon Tsi awd 5 speed last week. when i bought this car i had a good 20 min of practice that resulted in one pissed off owner biggrin.gif anyway ive been driving around and got everything down but now i cant get it into gear, ille be driving and everytime i try to shift into 2nd it goes in i push on the gas and then it likes to pop out mad.gif it does it in 2nd though 4th gears every once in a while but sometimes everything is smooth. Also iwhen i come to a stop and down shift into 1st gear i have to ram that damn thing in there because it just wont go. Now i dont know if im just slower than the average bear and missing something obvious, or if theres something wrong with the tranny. I talked to a friend and he had no clue what it was. I just bought the car and really dont want to have to rebuild the trans already. Anyone with some insight into my situation, let me know what you think.

Hate to rain on your parade, but sounds like syncros from what you described. How many miles on the car? Might want to change the tranny fluid and try something like GM syncromech.
Taxiwardance
only 96k on the tranny, 111k on the car. the trany fluid was just changed by the guy i bought if off of, but i have no idea what he used??? where would i have to look to find GM syncromech?? would i have to rebuild the whole trans to fix the syncros or would that just be the best thing to do anyway? i still have a few dollars left over from what i was going to use to buy a new car that i had planned on a few nice upgrades, but if i can get this taken care of thats prob what i will do.

You can buy GM syncromesh at any chevy dealer. It's about $6 or 7 a quart I think. You'd need three quarts for the tranny. if you end up having to replace the syncros, you would probably be ahead to go ahead and rebuld the tranny. Might want to have a professional look at the tranny before you go ripping it out and sending it off for a major overhaul. Try Josh at SloPony if you are close to Peoria. Spy can get you his number.

yeah ive been up there a few times, i live here in peoria so thats where i try to go for any problems. i think ille take it up there next week and see what i should do. thanks for the help

With your particular problem of the shifter popping out of gear in 2nd and forth (Both towards the back), I would try checking all of the shift linkage first and adust it the best you can at the shifter. Although after all the slipping out of gear that you have experienced the synchro's may be well worn anyway.

The adjustment is very straight forward and is even printed out in the Haynes manual.

Give it a shot. It's CHEAP!

BTW - GM Synchromesh is about $10/qt. and I normally get it at Green's Chevrolet because they keep it in stock.

i went up to green chevrolet earlier and got a few quarts. but on the way home put it into 3rd and it poped out so i put it back in and it poped out again i jammed it in there a 3rd time a heard a not so pleasent grinding. now whenever i try to put it into 3rd it goes into 1st gear unless i push it to the right beore i push it up same with 4th mad.gif ive been outside messing with it all day (hate this weather wheres the sun?) but still cant get it back to shift without having to push it slightly to the right. Im about a 6 pack away from putting my foot through this damn cars window!!!! Im prob going to go back up to slo pny tomorow morning and see what i should do.

When you change the fluid, you might try pulling the side cover off of the tranny and tightening the upper big bolt. I'm not sure if this is could cause your problem or not. It IS easy to try though.

well i got the side cover off but both of the 36mm bolts were on there as tight as i could get them, i filled it back up with some new gm syncromesh. what does everyone else use to fill up the trans?? i spent about 40 min filling it up with a cheap turkey baster and a plastic cup huh.gif . but i got it. is shifts a little better not as good as i had hoped though. anyone have an estimate on what it would cost to rebuild the tranny?

Give Josh at Slopny a call. Spy supplied his number.

i took it up there this afternoon and talked to josh, im just going to go and get the thing rebuilt most likley. But ive been talking to a guy who has a jdm gallant vr4 tranny with a 23 spline t case verrified 34k miles on it in good condition (switchable between awd and fwd) and he wants 600 shipped. but i could get a my current tranny rebuilt at slo pny for about 600 and thats removal and instalation and all that shit to! what should i do?

You can never garantee what your going to get out of a sight-unseen purchase like the GVR4 tranny. The switchable T-case is cool, but is that coming with the transmission? (At least I thought you switched it on the transfer case).

So if you get this other tranny, spend all the time to put it in and find that the 2nd gear synchro is starting to go out....you'll probably be kinda pissed. Unless you plan on checking the new tranny before you put it in, theres only one sure route. Have SloPony rebuild a transmission for you.

yeah thats pretty much what i was leaning towards. i dont want to spend all my cash on a tranny that i cant be 100% sure about. If anyone else is interested in the tranny i was talking about let me know and i will hook you up with the guys info, he sounds honest i guess he's sold about 10 JDM tranny's in recent months but cant be to sure about anyone on the net. yeah i think it switches on the t case but im not to sure
Taxiwardance
forgot to add that the transfer case comes with it

A couple of facts to add. Some JDM GVR4 trannies come stock with the double-synchro 2nd gear and the (sought-after by some, but not all) GVR4 tall 1st gear. You might want to ask the guy if he knows whether this tranny has either of these, if it'll make any difference in your decision, that is...
Taxiwardance
yep thats the one
