Full Version: Knock Sensor questions...

I started getting eratic knock the other day. Mainly in the first 10 min of driving. Big knock spikes or locking at 43 counts. All at light acceleration. Mash the throttle...no knock. After the 10 min, it acts normaly.

So after talking to NCgalant we suspect the knock sensor is going bad. It's of unknown vintage, got it when my other one melted to sealant out of it.

So it takes me 2 hours to get to the damn thing and it looks fine. Nothing's melted. I suppose it could be bad inside. I order one from Advance and it should be here tomorrow.

My questions:
1--anybody experience something similiar?
2--the sensor is a GP sorenson (sp?) the guy at Advance said he thought it came with just a pigtail. Do the colors match the stock connector, so I just have to splice it together. Or do I have to dig up a schematic from somewhere?

I have a 1g knock sensor if you need it.

I personally would only get the OEM Mitsu knock sensor. It sounds like you have phantom knock. The knock sensor is one of the many possible causes.

Here's a link to a yahoo group dedicated to phantom knock issues. Its not active anymore but it has a lot of good info.

Thanks for the link.

Seems strange though to develop phantom knock all of a sudden, when I neve had it previously.

I wanted to go OE Mitsu, but I'm racing Sat and don't have time to wait for Mitsu to order it.

A 2 piece crank can cause phantom knock. ohmy.gif But lightening can't strike twice can it?

I hate you Darryl mad.gif

It would be funny it it did hurt so bad....

Well the knock continues. I replaced the knock sensor and the knock is still there. So apparently the knock sensor was not the problem.

I'll check the ECU. But I just had it open a week or so ago.

NCgalant's going to look at the last chip burn. He thinks it may be jumping up a map for some reason. This is based on the log showing it pulling -5 (yes that's NEGATIVE 5) degree's of timing at part throttle around 2000-2500 rpm.

I guess if there's nothing wierd going on in the eprom tune, I can put the stock ecu and maft translator settings back in and see what happens.

Huh...Sorry to pull this thread up but one year later and I have the same problem pop up!

Huge random knock below 3000 rpm just tooling down the road, WOT is golden. I had Nathan reburn me a chip modified to try to ignore the knock before it goes into boost, but it still remains.

I wondering if I've got some lifters going bad and bleeding down causing enough racket to set off the knock sensor. I pulled off the valve cover and a few looked more compressed than the others. I guess under higher rpm (WOT) the oil pressure could keep them pumped up and quiet and not set off the knock sensor.

I'll probably call Mitsu and see how much an OEM knock sensor is, it's got a year old GP sorenson in it. Anybody know of a good place to get the 3G lifters? I remember reading that they are better for lifter tick.

Comments?

Gotta be honest, even though I love work and all, the GP Sorensen products are CRAP!! Recently though Advance got it's head out of it's butt and finally made the switch to all Borg-Warner products which are way better than GP. Might give Advance a call and see if they have a Borg-Warner sensor you could order and compare to the OE.

still gotta be cheaper than the one at the stealership... and I heard the same good things about borg warner stuff...

I also used to work at advance and agree that the old GP stuff was garbage... good to hear that they finally got their shit together.
