So after the 1G I got didn't work out, I've been parting it out and should have it completely gone on Saturday.
A buddy is buying my transmission from TRE as well. I will have ~$2500 on hand when all is said and done.
Friend of mine has a 95 for sale. Didn't say if AWD or FWD but I want the GSX. Has 133k miles on it. Black. Clean. Only rust is on rear quarter. 5spd.
I'm a little leery though because of all this I hear about crankwalk and things like that. I have a couple spare things off the 1G I could throw on it (BOV, boost controller)
What should I look out for? I know to look for strut tower rust and things like that now...

Crankwalk has to do with the main thrust bearing on the block. The early 1G motors had 3 separate caps for the crank. The later 1G and 2G motors had a solid "girdle" array of caps for the crank.
The best thing would be to replace the block. You can use an early non turbo 4g63, but you would be best advised to put oil squirters in the cylinders (like the turbo blocks had), and, obviously, get the knock sensor in the block, too.
check the vfaq website. This is a massively researched topic.

I know what the c word is

I want a DSM I can drive on a day to day basis. I understand they aren't reliable but I have the Cavalier if it breaks. I just don't want catastrophic failure like crankwalk...
I hear 95's are the worst for crankwalk... I may as well be patient and wait for a 92-94 1G like I wanted.

If you still want a 2G, fine. Just buy an early 1G block, then. Problem solved.
BTW- on this website, daily driving a DSM and reliability do NOT go hand in hand.

I understand they aren't notorious for being reliable but my buddy's almost stock 1G is still running good after a year of DD..

get the 2g,,,, drive it like a grandma until you have a 6 bolt swap ready... then beat the shit out of it till it pops... plus its only like 85% of them that are likely to crankwalk so maybe you will get lucky....
my buddy nate has a 97 gsx (orange/red) that he just rolled 205,000 miles on... yes i said it... 205,000.... he is slowly building a 6 bolt motor in the meantime as well....

Don't blame the cars man! 99% of everything that failed on my Talon has been due in one way or another to me increasing the designed performance levels. I can honestly say has to be the most misunderstood fact about DSM's period.
2g better than a 1G? Ehhh I think you just make work, what you like or can afford.

I agree with Kicks...you beat the snot out of a car and it's going to break. And most beat the snot out of their DSM's!
The other thing is a lot of people cheap out, jury rig their cars, don't do general maintenance on a 10 yr old car and then wonder why stuff breaks.

Exactly. I had my 93 GSX for 13 years with no mods and had zero reliability issues. If you push the car past its design limits, you will break something eventually.

So crankwalk isn't such a big deal if the car is maintained well and not modded? The one in question for me has intake and exhaust and that's it.

Crank walk is real, and you need to verify that it isn't present in any vehicle you are going to buy. If it is not present with as many miles as a used 2G probably has...then it probably won't be an issue for a while.
Minor things like exhaust and intake are not that big of a deal. It's those little $12 home made manual boost controllers that have made such a good and bad name for DSM's. If you can keep that off the car...it will be just like any other commuter. Then again why would you just want another commuter? That's just me.

We'll see I guess. My buyer on my transmission backed out so it doesn't matter anyways. Ugh.

Maroon? Kind of like kicks color, I think you've seen it driving by me before.

Alright so some details.
Kid came over in the car. When I walked out to it I thought it was slightly surging at idle but it turns out it is cammed. Has an intake and exhaust on it. GST. Not sure what else is done to it.
All I know is he admitted to dogging the absolute hell out of it with 137k miles on it. We'll see. He wants the same amount I'm asking for my 1G tranny so who knows..

I'd be cautious, but if the price is right, then why not
