I'm in need of new tires for the Talon, the OEM Goodyears are quite toasted.

Does anybody have a good stock size tire they'd recommend?

I was looking at maybe the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS, the Continental
ContiExtremeContact, the Kumho ECSTA KH11, or the Kumho
Ecsta MX.

I strongly recomend the toyo proxes fz4 , Its an awesome tire, I used them on my prelude, the suspension was set up and it would turn like mad. there about 120 a piece.

I would strongly recommend Falken tires. I absolutely love my Ziex 512's and am planning on getting the Azenis for my autocross wheels. They have this neat little rim protector feature too that has actually saved my wheels on my GST a few times from some nasty curb rash. Oh yeah, and I got the Ziex 512 205\55's for 16's for 200 mounted and balanced. They are extremely sticky, great in wet weather, and very aggressive looking. Ide say the only drawback is that they tend to throw alot of stuff up onto the car.

I'm very interested in your selection Wortdogg. Especially after you commented how my crappy Good Years weren't helping me any at the Autocross training.

I need to wrap my RX7 wheels with some tread and start wearing them again!

I love the Kumho's I've been using over the past couple of years. Pretty decent traction and wear, at a great price and terrific look. You're AWD, so I'd just get anything that's decent.

Well, its not a track car (or even an Auto-X car) by any stretch. It still has the stock suspension with I believe the original or nearly original shocks. So I'm mostly looking for an all season tire that doesn't have tons of sidewall flex while retaining decent treadlife. Since this is my winter car, I'm giving some extra weighting to snow traction also. Winter is definately the car's favorite season

I was mostly commenting on how crappy MY Goodyears are, they have as much cornering grip as an average minivan tire. But, you're right, they certainly don't help much for autocrossing, assuming you have the OEM Goodyear RS-A.

Hey Marcus, on those RX7 wheels, any idea if you've got the PFD wheels or regular FD wheels? Just curious.

To get back on track. My uninformed self is probably going Pirelli P7000 just because I read they were currently the lightest ones made.

KOU, I'm not sure what PFD or FD reffers to. As far as tires I had Pirelli P7000 on my RX7 wheels. I like the way they look, but I couldn't get those things to stick in the corners and AWD launches were just spin fests! My cheap ol' Good Years definitly hook-up better than the Pirelli's by a long shot. I wont buy those again.

Looks like I'll take your advice on the Pirelli's Marcus. I'll trust your experience over my advertisement reading any day.

On the PFD wheels. Look on the wheel next to your valve stem. Cast into the wheel on one side of it will say PFD on some of the 3rd gen RX7 wheels. These are the 13 pound rims. The other 3rd gen RX7 rims look the same on the outside but have more reiforcement on the back end and weigh in the neighborhood of high 15 pounds or so

Yeah, the '93 RX-7 my friend (with a 96 GS-T) just bought has the PFD 13lb wheels. The wheels also have a 1992 date of manufacture on them.

Also, mounted on those PFD wheels were Toyo Proxes FZ4, and I must say the car was quite a pleasure to drive with these on it. Not even that much wheelspin in 1st gear, at least to other 3G RX-7's I've ridden in. Sidewall flex was pretty minimal during highspeed lane changes, etc. I think these might be a little too expensive for my Talon though at $120 a piece.

On our way back to Chambana, we ran into a 90-91 AWD Talon that wanted to play with the GS-T some. He had no exhaust beyond the downpipe, an S-AFC, triple gauge pillar, and hoodpins, of all things. Who knows what was under the hood. The stocker GS-T held its own pretty well.

I checked my RX7 rims tonight. They are the ultimate 'PFD' 13 lb. wheels! I'm stoked and I've owned them for more than a year now. What a deal. These wheels will be getting mounted before the SCDS in September!

BTW - I have (3) Pirelli P7000's 225-16-50's that I want to get rid of if anyone is interested.

What's the wear like on those pirellis? If they're new enough I'd almost be tempted to just buy a 4th one new and put them on one of the sets I've got sitting around.

Oh, and Eric, I should have a set of 'new' all-season tires for sale pretty shortly. I'll have to double check though on the brand as they're currently sitting on my car in Peoria.

I'm not sure I would consider them almost new, but I bet theres at least 3/4 of the tread left. They look to be in very good shape, but you can come see for yourself anytime.

I've been looking at some new tires too since the accident. I'm looking at the Dunlop SP sport 9000's, the Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3, or the Kumho Ecsta MX's. I think I'll probably go with the Kumho's for the price, downside is it looks like they will wear faster.

Oops, I take what I said about my old P7000's back. I checked them out last night and there are only two descent tires and the tread wear is closer to 1/2 of their total. Sorry for the missleading information.

I weighed the 1993 RX7 PFD wheels I have today at work on the shipping scale. With the valve stem, balance weights, and brake/road scum they weigh almost exactly 15lb. each. It may not be 13lb. but heck that's at least 1lb lighter than I thought they were to begin with!!! Not bad.

wort, what did you end up choosing and what are your impressions?

I'm looking for 275/40/17's for the evo and I'm choosing to be honest with myself and get tires that fit my average use, rather than what I'd just like to be able to say I'm running. So, I'll be looking for somethin with a decent treadwear rating (360 and above), all season characteristics (particularly considering the wide nature of the tires), and of course, the budget is a factor as well.

At this point, I'm looking at Kumho Ecsta ASX's, Continental ContiExtremeContact, Avon
Tech M550 A/S, Sumitomo HTR+, and finally, the BFGoodrich g-Force T/A KDWS. If I had to choose at this moment, I'd go with the Kumhos as I think they'll be comparable to the Supra 712's I've had a lot of experience with, but there seems to be a lot of good offerings out there.

Anybody with experience care to chime in? I figure tire choice is a crucial decision so I want to have as much information as possible.

I don't think I have heard a bad review at all with the BFG's. However, I don't think they are reccomended for snow use.

i just got 4 new tires for the GVR4 and it will mostly be a DD and it only has 190-60-15's I went with a set if firestone indy500's firehawk indy 500 mind did not come with white lettering

Last year, before I put new tires on the Talon I gave quite a bit of thought to this subject. I had myself set on a set of BF Goodrich G-Force Sports which are a quite nice high performance summer tire with great dry and wet traction benefits. As I recall, they were better than the Ecsta Supra 712s and well within budget. They aren't all seasons but from the tread design they don't look like they'd be all that bad. Of course though, my choice was aimed at summer only selections since I try not to drive it in the winter.

Now, I actually decided on a totally different tire. It is an all season and I've actually only lost traction once (in the wet) and it was for a brief second. I also know that Lawrence (the one with the white EVO) has these on his car and he said that he's not afraid to test the limits of his car while in the wet with these tires. They are the Falken Ziex ZE 512, which is the same one Mark had.

I've got the 225/45ZR17 tires on my car and I love them. Even launching at 5500rpms at SCDC on an ACT 2600 and those tires I couldn't get one to spin.

All for the measly price of $450 mounted and balanced.

After searching around....I ended up going with the Falken GR Beta 415's (on the evo)

For 402 out the door, I even got the lifetime warranty (you can slash the tire, run over nails, hit curbs....anything) and you get a new tire. You dont even need to ship them the old tire, they just send you a new one. I ordered at like 2pm on wednesday and I had them on friday

Most of you know how I drive, and these tires suit my fancy. I realize they are not F1 tires so they arent going to do everything I ask, but for a complete set for well under 100 per tire, I couldnt go wrong. I had initially wanted the Khumo MX's but tireack had them on backorder for sometime, plus they were 30 more per/tire.

Well, I ran the ContiExtremeContact for a while until I destroyed a wheel, they were ok, no major complaints, like Kumhos they tend to flatspot a little bit when it sits overnight.

The next tire I ran was the Kumho MX summer tire, which was a great tire (comparable to the newer Falken Azeni), but wore out really quickly of course. That last track day I did this summer really finished them off.

Now I have the Kumho Ecsta ASX's, and they're better than the Contis were as far as grip goes, and they tend to have better communication with the driver near the limits. My parents have ContiExtremeContacts on their 96 Impala SS, and they can be a bit noisy in the wider sizes. The Contis do seem to be a good bit better in the snow than the ASX's, while the ASX"s work slightly better in the rain.

Haunter had the Sumitomo HTR+ on his Saturn, I wasn't too impressed with them. People seem to have problems with them wearing funny if the air pressures aren't absolutely perfect.

Of couse, what I have to say is pretty subjective, as I did quadruple the spring rates, lower the car, stiffen some suspension points, and put new tie-rods on it in while I was running the MX's, so its not really a fair comparison between the Conti's and the ASX"s. Neither tire is really super perfect, they're just decent for the price.

I've been running Kumho Ecsta MX's on the Evo for the past two years, except in the winter. They have a lot of dry grip, and don't do too bad in the wet. Definitely do not run them in the snow, unless you want to some drifting and donuts that is. If you have any kind of toe in dialed in on your wheels be sure to rotate them often as the MX's do wear fairly quickly.

well, I think I cheaped out on the gsx and went with Kuhmo Ecsta ASX in 245/45/17. My primary considerations were the fact that it has decent wet traction, good treadlife, and at 90 a tire, was 50 cheaper than the G-force KDWS's that were my next best tire. I ended up deciding that I didn't need the snow traction as I will continue to have snow tires for this car for winter driving. I have the stock evo rims mounted to the gsx right now with the old kumho supra's in 235 section width i was running on the evo and I don't expect to have a problem with the 245's. My high spring rate helps considerably with fender clearance issues that would otherwise be a major problem.

On the evo, I still haven't made the purchase, but I'm leaning towards the aforementioned KDWS in 275/40/17 as even though I really don't expect to get stuck in the snow much in this car, (not my winter car so much), I dont' want to screw myself over and get something too performance oriented.

Just went with Ecsta Supra 712s for the Miata, they are pretty nice, especially considering the sub-$200 price for the 4.

Wet traction is far beyond what I expected.

I am currently running Dayton Datona ZR tires on my car for street tires.... size 225/50/16... what I like about them is the extremely long time that they are wearing.... I have had the ones that are on the back of my car on there for well over 25,000 miles.... not sure of the accual age seeing as they are the tires that were on the car when I bought it 3 years ago.
also very good dry and wet traction.... they are also decent for snow traction for what they are.
IMHO..... very good street tire!!!!!

I run Falken azeni sports in size 205/40/16 for track tires.... good for dry traction, but thats about it... tires wear sucks and so does wet traction.

I have run the BFG G-force T/A KDWS before on different vehicles and was very pleased with dry, wet and snow traction as well as tires wear....
IMHO...... also very good street tire!!!!!!

I am accually considering going back to the BFG, however, I think I will use the KDW instead of the KDWS on my next tire swap.

I liked mine when I had them, but once I got decent wear on them the wet traction went to shit


I have ASX's now and they do well


as wort said the sumi HTR+'s were actualyl almost gone in about 6k miles thanks to running about 5PSI over what the tire wanted
