I ordered all my misc. Mitsubishi parts and gaskets from Conicelle on Wednesday. This morning a recieved a FedEx box containing my order complete as requested!

BTW - Because I had to have the crank turned down .010 I am having to use Clevite bearings that I'm getting from Winner's Circle for about a quarter of the price of O.E.M. So after putting these bearings in correctly, I'll test them to their limits along with a turned down crank and we'll find out first hand if there's any truth to the Bearing and crank myth.

My Conicelli stuff arrived yesterday evening, I had ordered it all on Monday. The crank in the motor I got was so good I didn't even consider turning it. Did you have the crank re-nitrided after it was turned?

There's nothing wrong with Clevite bearings IMHO, but I couldn't find them anywhere for much cheaper than the stock Mitsu bearings.

I wouldn't call turning down the crank a myth. Its a fact that the crank is forged and hardened. As far as how much turning it down actually weakens it, I couldn't tell ya. The bearing problem on the other hand may very well be just a myth.

Without getting all hung up on the meanings of words, I say the myth that a turned Mitsu crank will fail is just that. Of corse turning down the diameter of an object makes it weaker than it was (means nothing without context), but is it weak enough to fail (Means everything to my engine)?

Then again, like I said I will be testing these theories one way or the other very soon.

Depending on the process for the surface hardening, it probably only goes about 0.003 to 0.005 inches into the crank from the bearing surface, so taking a crank 10/10 will completely wipe out the surface hardening.

I bet that even a non-hardened crank will last just fine under 400hp as long as you're not running knock counts through the roof all of the time. So I'm sure you'll be fine

BTW, I've snapped a 20/20 Buick crank in half with less than stock horsepower due to a bad tune/questionable oil pressure.

Just got done building the shortblock tonight, all the clearances look good. Installing those balance shaft elimnator block off bearings sure is a PITA though. The ACT Flywheel sure is pretty

Well heres another batch of unsubstantiated information to add to the confusion that causes these myths.

My engine builder told me that the crank hardening can be as deep as .018 into the surface of the crank. Obviously this level may vary over the surface area, but if true would mean that a .010 under crank is still ok.

Odly, I've also heard that some of our DSM hero engine builders regularly use turned down cranks in the engines they build for customers. Again I'm not trying to say anything bad about a company so don't take it that way. But if Buscher and Shepard among others really do use turned cranks in rebuilt engines then I'm sure their good enough for my uses.

The DSM comunity always seems to take the most conservative view on all things that could ever possibly break. I mean how many domestic V8's, 6 and 4 cylinders do you think are runing around out there with turned CAST cranks? There is probably more High HP domestic engines with turned cranks than there are performance DSMs all together. Plus I don't see a crank actually breaking because it was turned down unless there was already a flaw in it or there was some crazy engine wrecking explosions. The only thing I can see the lack of hardening do on the surface of the crank is to allow wear and eventually rod knocking or crank walking.

Well, hardening a crank is dirt cheap, so I'm guessing they just re-harden it after they turn it. We harden things like swaybars and spline axles all the time for Formula.

Your car never sees any of those crazy engine wrecking explosions, does it?

Honestly, I think that may be part of the reason the Mitsu decided to put hardened forged cranks in our cars. The increased knock potential of a turbcharged engine calls for a robust crank. Me being the devil's advocate aside, I seriously doubt you'll have any problems though, as long as you provide enough fuel and cool enough air and I think you'll have those covered.
