This is a very interesting read. Mitsu has developed an engine that is more fuel efficient and more powerful due to a two stage direct injection engine. The fuel is injected directly into the cylinders (on top of strangely shaped pistons) in stages depending on engine load. The new engines are extemely clean and knock resistant (great for a turbocharged engine, esp. if it adapts to changes in boost levels). Its a technical read but if you can find a few minutes to skim through it I think you will find it interesting. It is rumored that the new EVO VIII's being released in the U.S. in January will have this technology. Meaning it may not be the good 'ole 4G63 powerplant anymore...but over 250 horses stock nonetheless.

Yeah, I was trying to imagine how the head would look with that strange straight down intake port design.

The GDi design is pretty cool. My dad informed me about it a couple of years ago and I checked out their information posted to that date. Another company named Orbital or something of that nature has actually gone pretty far with this concept as well. Their design is used in many boat motors and other small engnes.

If you step out of the box and use your imagination a little bit you can almost imagine a 2 cycle type engine, with no moving parts on the head except injectors for fuel, liquid O2, and an ignition sorce. With the two cycle design the exhaust gasses created could escape as the piston is pushed down past an exhaust port. I hear that 2-cycle is not the most efficient, but no moving parts on a head and the ability to COMPLETELY tune your air/fuel raito AND timing for any RPM range by computer are pretty powerfull strengths.

BTW-That's the first time I shared that little bit of creativity with anyone. I have some basic drawings at home. LEt's see how long it takes for that puppy to be put into production! Anyone want to help me put a one off R&D engine together?

That's a pretty cool concept, Marcus. How expensive is liquid O2? Theoretically you could take a 2 cycle dirtbike motor and machine the block for direct O2 injection. I guess you'd have to design a head and a fuel delivery system. Not to mention a fuel injection computer...

I imagine liquid O2 is a bit cold requiring a special fuel delivery system that won't freeze.
