Sorry if this post is in the wrong place or anything but I just joined. I bought a '90 Laser on the cheap with a blown headgasket a couple weeks ago and am looking at putting in the wrench time this weekend.

Since I have no idea when the timing belt was done last either, I was thing about just pulling the motor entirely and putting in stiffened motor mounts. Changing the timing belt. Changing the head gasket. Putting in a balance shaft elimator kit. Am I saving myself time by doing this all at once? I'm a bit leary of the timing belt given this is my first DSM (re: interference engine).

Should I just do all the free mods at the same time as well? (hack air can, honeycomb removal, etc.)?

Any help would be much appreciated.

whoops, would a mod please move this somewhere appropriate please? I have no idea how i put it in the 'For sale' forum. Sorry to muck up the threads.

Hey welcome to DSMCentral!

Glad to see your post got relocated ok. wink.gif

I would definitely say that it's well worth it to change your timing belt and remove your balance shafts while you are doing the head gasket work. Also add a new water pump and maybe timing belt tensioner to that list as well.

The free mods can be done any time, so I wouldn't clutter your to do list now.

Kris highly recommends that you should remove the engine to remove the balance shafts. I know that the timing belt is a lot easier that way, and there isn't much left to take out the engine if your going to go to all the work of replacing the head gasket. That is if you don't call the transmission removal much work. (If not now...it will become second nature after you've owned your Laser for a while wink.gif )

BTW-Get the good factory head gasket...not aftermarket.

Thanks! The DSMers I've spoken briefly with so far have been a really helpful bunch. I'm sure I can use all the help and advice I can get too this being my first 4g63 and my first turbo.

Oh, and another thanks for such a straight forward response to my post. I was starting to build a massive 'to-do' list on it and was beginning to think I'd have a giant downtime before I fired the Laser up again.
