Full Version: awd tranny conversion for fwd

yep, you'll need a VCE and probably a stronger center diff (4 spider, spool, welded, take your pick).

Marcus, what's your opinion on that spool? From the TRE site, it looks like it comes with a VCE is this correct? I know that the weight savings are probably negligable, but what are they over the internals of the stock center diff and VC?

IMO, a shorter first gear in a FWD will hurt you more than help. If you think smoke the tires bad now, wait til you have the super short AWD 1st gear.

That being said, the conversion should theoretically work with with a VCE. It should bolt right up.

oh yeah, you'll want to use an AWD flywheel and the AWD metal insert between the block and flywheel.

Only you would have enough spare parts to go from FWD tranny to AWD tranny.

Been thinking a little bit about this. Not sure it will get you any deeper into 4th gear at the traps. I'll let the gurus here correct me but I thought the 2,3, and 4 gears were the same between the AWD and FWD. Fifth is shorter in the AWD but you won't need it at your current trap speeds.

Am I missing something?

After some translation, I'd have to say yes, a GVR4 1st gear would give better traction. Marcus has already proved how brittle those can be, but your car won't be seeing all those rev-limit smacking awd launches either. biggrin.gif

Kris also brings up a good point. Not only will you need the flywheel and the plate. You'll probably also need the front and rear motor mounts off an AWD, or else the AWD transmission mount won't line up correctly. That's something I ran into when swapping the motor from my GST into the AWD Talon. Took a few tries for me to get everything right. cool.gif

Yes the VCE does come with the spool.

Now that I'm connecting the VCE on the AWD shaft correctly, It seems to be quieter more. The spool definitely puts the load on all four wheels at the same time, lowering your effective clutch engagement RPM.

I love the Spool for our winter season that is coming up shortly! It also rocks for fast sweeping curves. However, it is not for the meek or those that want a 'nice' around the parkinglot cruiser. The spool beats the crap out of the CV joints in slow tight turns.

And Spy...on your idea I seriously think a shorter 1st and second gear might do you some good at the track...IF you completely forget about using 1st. gear. It seemed like your current first gear was a total waste at the track recently. Give it a shot buddy, that would be a new one. cool.gif
