Hey! I just found this site through a link Natedogg had on dsmtalk. I live in Crystal Lake and wondering if there are any meets happening soon. The Chicago club DSM never seems to meet. I'm hoping to have my Talon back tomorrow [new factory clutch

] and need somewhere to go to start breaking the clutch in. Anyone live out near here?

Welcome to DSMCentral.
Where exactly is Crystal Lake? We need to get together before it gets any colder. I have to do my tranny now, but others may be ready.

Trannybreakerscentral.com.LOL

Crystal Lake is about 40 mi NW of Chicago, about 30-45 min from the Wisconsin border depending on traffic and how fast you drive. I usually get there pretty quick  I only know a few local DSM guys and would like to meet more. Most DSMers tend to be a lot older than me, but they also generally know more than the people I know around here. It would be nice to get to know someone that actually knows something about the car they drive and don't blow it up all the time. That seems common among the people I know, it makes us look as bad as the RX7s.

Let's just say I always keep my machetee and goalie mask in my trunk. Oops, did I just type that?

Welcome to the club. Glad you found us. If you're looking for guys that don't blow up their cars, though, you've come to the wrong place. It seems to be a fairly regular occurance for us.

Good idea. Let's see. I've broken 2 shift forks at 2 different times in my FWD transmission. I've banged up/warped some valves in my FWD head. And finally I've broken a shift fork and a shift rail in my AWD transmission. Geez, that's depressing...

Transmission:
Ive actually only broken my transmission once. (This time) I sent it off to Shephard before, when I was doing my clutch and flywheel install so I could get the crappy synchros replaced and have him add any magic that holds his transmissions together.
Motor/head:
I burnt two valves right after I installed my 3" cat back and advanced the timing! oops.
Then I recently burnt a hole in my number 1 piston making a full pull into fifth gear trying to keep Dan behind me. oops again.
There's been other minor things, but all in all I'm pretty happy with the durability of these cheap little cars for all the abuse they take.
I'm just glad that I'm able to do most all of this myself.

That's got to be the best part about these cars. Sure they break. But they're cheap to fix and most of the work can be done by the owner. I've always thought this was cool on DSM's because compared to other cars the factory forced induction engine and AWD drivetrain is actually quite a bit more complicated. We are almost obligated to thank other DSM owners such as Tom Stangl and Todd Day, who were willing to break into their rides and give free, detailed instructions on how to fix and mod these cars. Helpful DSM owners are what make it easy to own, fix, modify, and race these cars.

A meet sounds good, but I'm sorry to inform you guys that most of our DSMCentral meets are held near Peoria and Bloomington. Still 2.5 hours away from South Chicago! The Chicago Club DSM seems to meet up quite a bit though.
If you guys want to propose a meet some where in between, we might have a few interested but I usually have a hard time getting people to simple come out to Washburn about a half hour North of Peoria!

Woodfeild would be cool, but its still probably closer to us than the rest of the club. A neutral site is okay with me so long as someone can help me get my car hame when it breaks down in the middle of nowhere. I'm beginning to wish I had sprung for the towing insurance. As far as people around here blowing up cars, it's not the car's fault, it's the owners around here that think they know about their car than they do, and do stupid shit to the engine. One guy ran 25 psi on his ported 14 b and stock fuel system. What do you think happened as a result?

who did this specifically?
You been hanging out in Chicago, Dan? Getting to know people? He's not talking about anyone around Peoria. He's in Chicago.

Actually i'm north of Chicago. The guy who did this is even further north in Harvarde. A small town damn near in Wisconson. I haven't seen him in a while. Wonder why? Actually, I just found out about a big meet in Schaumburg I'm planning on going to this weekend. It started om mwir.net and got expanded to club dsm chicago. If anyone is interested, it's at the Fudruckers on Golf road at about 8:00 PM on Sat. It's probably a ways out for you guys, but I just thought I would tell you.

Thanks Turboawd...
more information is always better. Plus I would actually like to try to make a meet up in Chi town sometime. I'd rather do it when the weather is more conducive to racing though!
Maybe a bunch of us can head up that way some time.
