some body correct if I'm wrong here... I'm not the be all ends all knowledge on this... But i think most of the stock flywheels i've handled weigh somewhere around 25-30 pounds. I could bbe off a little there.

This might not apply to DSM guys, but I don't see why it wouldn't, but for drag, lighter flyhweels are bad. When launching it the rotational interia of the flywheel that helps you get off the line. A lighter flywheel means you have to launch higher and it is more inconsistant. It will also drop rpm's faster between shifts, which is a bad thing for us that other car that we shall not name guys with VTEC to worry about dropping out of. But for road racing and a street car it would be a good thing. Other than when taking off from a stop you'll have to slip it at a higher rpm to get going. I have no idea what the weight is, but I thought I would throw that in there.

this is the best thing to ever happen to this site. hahaha. sorry, i'm easily entertained.
could be wrong here, but i'm pretty sure you can expect to lose about 20 lbs with a lightweight fly wheel. ranta does have a point. A point that my 2 cents doesn't really worry about. Just launch at higher rpm that other car that we shall not name ugly bag of mostly water -------------------- game over.

I've driven on a fidanza. yes, there is a noticeable difference in how fast the revs go both up and down. I didnt mind it tho. and was still capable of launching at 4k

I have no idea what the weight is, but I thought I would throw that in there. A couple points worth mentioning here: I doubt the car is going to be a dedicated, nothing but drag car, so the overall benefits will definately outweigh the minor tradeoffs IMHO. Although a heavier flywheel will store more kinetic energy and help with the launch, changing your driving style slightly will cure the issues. Just launch higher. Same shock to the drivetrain as it is getting the same amount of rotational inertia transferred to the trans. Even if the car was a true dragstrip monster, he would most likely be running a lightened flywheel. I've never seen any 'heavy as stock' or 'heavier than stock' aftermarket flywheels and the stocker won't hold up to 600hp launches (I'm pretty sure the stock flywheel is not approved for certain E.T.'s either). Last I checked Daryl was running a 9-10 pound chromealloy flywheel on his 9 sec beast. Just my $0.02 -------------------- |

The chro-moly flywheels apparently aren't working out for the big HP guys, they're all back to Fidanzas. At least, Darryl told me that he and Shepard have both switched back.
When you actually have an engine that makes good power, a heavy flywheel isn't really all that necessary for drag launches, especially with a stutterbox. Mr. Awd4kicks seems to have no trouble launching with a fidanza. If your transmission is that hard to shift that your RPMs are droppping between shifts more than what it takes to match the next gear, I don't know what to tell you, except that its relatively easy to be on the throttle a little bit during a shift. -------------------- Eric Wort
