but who wants to come to a site that is nothing but tech? it kinda takes the fun out of it. why be part of a community if you cant act like it is a community. making it nothing but tech makes it a cold lifeless place.

I don't want a board that pushes anyone away. We welcome everyone here, membership is not restricted, regardless of your viewpoints, vehicle ownership, or pretty much anything else.

What I would like to see is a board that benefits the majority of the members in the best way possible. I think the best way to consistently provide a mutual benefit to all members is through content, assistance, and serving as a resource to members in time of need, whether that need be technical assistance, parts (e.g. DSMC Exchange), or a host of other things that are directly DSM related.

What I don't think is a benefit to anyone other than those with time on their hands are pages upon pages of chatter best kept to pm's or IM conversations, e-fighting and trashtalking, or other similar antics for diversion.

Listen guys, I sympathize more than most. I work 3rd shift and can attest to the fact that it gets slow at times, and it's tempting to just rustle up some action, ruffle some feathers, and cause a commotion just for the sake of interesting action. But, lets all agree to do our best to keep it in check, keep the discussions moving forward in a positive direction and we'll all be able to continue to use the site to our advantage.

This is not, by the way, NOT a big problem with DSMC at all. The board, by and large, is an exemplary community of enthusiasts who each add a valuable benefit to the rest and I can't think of a single problem member we have as I value everyone on the board and appreciate their comments and contribution. The Admins are doing a simply amazing job between the board itself and setting up DSM Exchange which is in my opinion an invaluable resource already. This is a great community with a really super base of members, so it's a testament to our collective solidarity and continuing good health that we can have discussions of this nature.

Without trying to sound too philosophical, I think the most important thing for this board to maintain is the feeling of belonging and tight-knittedness (if that's even a word). If it takes a little off-topic banter every now and then to do that, then I'm all for it. But there is a fine line there that's not always easy to see (even for the mods) that defines what is harmless offtopic banter and what is harmful to the site and its members.

Us mods are trying our hardest to keep things in perspective and be fair about it, but we're only human so its not always easy for us to find that fine line.

I agree with Kris that DSMCentral is the finest example of a car forum out there. 99% of the time the members, mods, and admins all mesh and I can think of only one bad apple that we've had to ban from the board completely during the 6+ years of dsmcentral's existence. (Remember ole TurbomeTroy?) That's a damn fine record for any board with over 700 members. I think we should all give ourselves a pat on the back and rub one off while we're at it.

I'd like to think that this site is nothing like DSMtuners. DSMT has a national level following but, there is a constant flow of stupidity flowing through it. People who don't read the rules and don't use the search button before they ask questions. From time to time, yes it happens here and sometimes even to me even though I don't readily admit it all the time. I like to think though that the members of this board are smarter than 95% of the members on DSMT. The way we conduct ourselves and answer questions with research has everything to do with maturity and intelligence. Don't get me wrong, I love to parade around the house in my skivvys and act like an idiot from time to time but, we are all here for the sole purpose of gathering and sharing information about DSMs. I love the fact that we're such a tech focused site with the occasional rant to keep things interesting. If in order to keep this group as tight and composed as it has been for the three years I've been here, then I'm all for it.

I think Goat is right, the guidelines Spy mentioned have been the same from the beginning. That doesn't mean that we have ever let BS fly or enjoyed some ourselves. These guidelines are just the core that we need to center our discussions on. We have been straying a bit far lately and we just need to keep it in check. Once we start spending more time in the driver seat as warm weather approches this may not even be an issue that is thought about.

I appreciate all the kudos for a clean site. It would not be possible without the group of serious gearheads that we have here at DSMCentral. I think you all are an awesome group of people I'm very glad to know through this site.

One thing's for sure, you can't please everyone. We all do a pretty good job of being patient, understanding, giving, and honest with each other. If we could not work together in this way and ended up with the chaos found on other forums I would not be here either.

Personally, I think our signal to noise ratio is pretty good. Personally I prefer tech discussions to just about anything else. That being said, there are plenty of people on this sight that I'd call friends and if they want to blow some online steam once in a while, I'm ok with that.

Is there any way that the front page can be customized so I only see new posts from the forums I select? That way if there is something in the CII forum or some other that I don't want to read, I can just not see it.

I like the spy channel idea...the smack talking is sometime fun to read when you've got the time.

I've seen some boards have some "lounge" area where anything goes, NWS stuff etc. You could make the area locked out until someone has 50 posts or something. That would let people join the board and get settled (get to know people) without being possibly offended right off the bat.

I dont think a strictly technical site is a very good move. If i wanted a strictly technical site iw ould just research machv or dsmtuners. After all theres no thought in my head about a dsm that somone else hasbt already asked or done. The reason dsm central should breath is a common meeting place for central illinois dsm enthusiasts. A place to chat, hang out and talk about racing at the track the night b4. Why try and make a honda-tech v2 version dsm?? Getting rid of the off topic is like taking away Lunch at work. You do nothing but work hard at your boring job (ie, the tech) but you havnt nothing fun to look foward to (ie, the ot)

I disagree with several of these points. MachV is much less than a tech-only site. Plenty of flaming and immaturity to be had. Also, there's no possible way that everything that can be done has already been thought of or asked. If that were true, there'd be no reason to get out of bed in the morning.

And finally, no one has said you can't talk about a race, possible setups and crossbreeeds or anything like that. Should I post a Q on how to fix my toyota? No. Putting a 4g63 in a toyota? Absolutely.

I understand that things change and sometimes they must change to keep up with the times. I have noticed some changes over the last year or so that to me were noticeable but not really a big deal but I agree with some of the others that if things continue in the way that quite of few of the members are talking about both in this forum and in person then I believe that quite a few memebers will be driven away. Yes I know that we have 700+ members, but how did we get that many? Answer: by being the board that we have been the past 6 years and giving people the freedom to discuss whatever is on their mind to a certain extent. I also seems and I have noticed this for a long time now that at times it depends on who you are as to what you are allowed to talk about.. I have seen people start topics that were not even close to being on topic that lasted for days and had multiple pages then I have seen people post things and be immediatly(sp.) told to keep it on topic. Such as items that they are trying to sell. Who is to say that someone that is selling item X is not going to use that money on their car but another person can post something that has nothing to do with a DSM and nothing is said about it. Think back and look back through posts over the years and you will see what I am talking about. I am not trying to flame anybody or offend anybody here just state facts that have been discussed by many people in the real world in person.

Basically what I am trying to say all in all is I love this site but as the old saying goes.........If it isn't broke fix it till it is.....................be careful guys .

Point taken, but you have to remember this has been a hobby for us all, including me. This is not a full time job nor do I want it to be. So you will find many instances where I was not online to catch something or times where I just didn't feel like dealing with things at the time. This is why I brought three more DSM Brothers onboard as moderators to help pick-up my slack. They have been doing a great job, but you will always see slightly different ways of handling things when different people are involved in making the decisions.

As far as some getting special treatment at times this is not meant to exist but I am not suprised that it does on occasion. Whether it's lack of time, energy, or not wanting to upset a friend...these things have happened.

Aside from Image's, Spy's, and a couple others outbreaks of E-fits, this site has gone exactly as I would like to see. No offense to these guys, they know what and when they are doing things outside my opinions of the guidleines set at the beginning, and they are getting better. That doesn't mean everyone can go and try ignore rules and get away with them.

Honestly I am very upset at how useless some of the other forums have become to us due to the BS trolling, post whoring and arguments that go on there. Those could have been great and meaningful sites of reference if it were not for the trash that is thrust upon them by a few wacked members. I don't want those type problems on DSMCentral and if people that enjoy those things get offended by any of these guidelines and decide not to come around, it wont hurt my feelings any. If the majority agrees that they all want a site that will throw itself to oblivion with the rantings of this worlds views on equality for troublemakers then I want off this ride.

i know im posting on this subject a little late but I have to get my .02 cents in. I guarentee the strict rules will run people off. Look at GatewayDSM for example. It used to be huge. People had fun talking about cars and yelling at each other. Then it changed and if you even think about posting somthing off topic or tell someone that theyre an idiot even if you just joking, itll get deleted. I usually see about 2-4 post a day on there because its absolutely a ghost site. I like this site much better. But if you have to change it then come over to buds site that he started. I dont understand what youre all complaining about. there are about 3 post in this topic about starting another dsm site if this one changes. Therefore, I was saying, dont bother, bud already has one. Im not plugging anyones freaking site, I was just responding to the people that said they should start a new site if this one turns into a tuners style site. man, ive been around DSM's for 5 years now. I dont need a bunch of people yelling at me about how what I did was wrong, or telling me that im being childish. You guys are alright. You all are aiming for the same thing, but some are worried this site will not be free enough for the normal user. This is causing us to fight about things that are really mute. Even if things changed on this site, there is a lot of controversy over something that hasn't happened to date.

I've tried to clarify over and over that the guidelines mentioned in this post are just that. I would say that 95% of the posts on this site have been tollerable or close enough. There is just some extremes that we need a vehicle to correct by. This is what the guidlnes are for.

As you can tell by my actions over the weekend while typing under the influence. I am far from a perfect example. As you can see, Spyder was able to contain the carnage knowing he was in the right by the guidlines we had set-up. No hard feelings on my end. Just good DSM site working like a well oiled machine!

i do not know drew, but i dont see that he did anything wrong. he wasnt recruiting or campaigning. he didnt talk down dsmc and talk up buds site. i think there has been alot of overreaction by members in this thread and i can see why drew is upset. sure he could handle it in a more subdued manner, but we all react differently. we dont know what goes on in his daily life, we dont know if he's had a bad day or is under alot of stress, so for us to judge him based on his defensive replies, really only makes us narrowminded assholes.
