I started working on the 97 Gst I bought my wife this weekend. I'm pulling the motor so I start to take the halfshafts out. For a 97 the axle nuts were extremly rusty. I finally get the nuts off and the spline section of the halfshaft is totally seized to the hub. I tried heat and a sledge hammer and nothing. Needless to say I destroyed the threads on the half shafts! mad.gif I ended up pulling the whole hub off just to get the halfshafts out of the way.

So I pull the motor out and I am suprized to see several bolts missing! The guy I bought it from said it ran and had a fresh bottom end on it. He must of takin me for a fool!! First off I look at the timing belt and it's two teeth off from time. Then im looking at the tensioner and the part that the tensioner piviots don't even have a bolt in it to hold it to the block!!!!
I notice several bolts missing. I pull the head and I mad.gif mad.gif see a bent valve, and two little nicks on top of the piston where two other valves have hit!!!!l mad.gif I found a head for it I'm going to get next weekend.

I took pics of all this and will try to post them soon.

He just claimed to put the timing belt on. He did say it ran fine. That was a lie!!! He pulled pullys off the car before I could hear it run.

Did a little work on it this weekend. I was taking the bolt out of the front case and realized that the crank seal was not there!!!!! I'm no master mechanic but I'm kinda thinking that is important!!! What a Jack ass!!!! How would you leave that out? He told me it ran. I bet oil was leaking if it did run!!! laugh.gif

Why do people insist on lying to sell their stuff? When people start finding out who it was I bet he won't be selling much of anything else from now on. I know there were more major things, but come on, putting silicone on a cracked valve cover. Just replace the damn thing! I agree with Kapoosh, I probably would have taken it back and demanded my money back also.

I deleted my photos for some reason.

It's done and running. Well it ran for about .8 of a mile. Drove it down to the gas station and ran out of gas about 400 yards away. So I decide to push it the rest of the way. Wow!!!! Huge mistake!!!! I am so out of shape it ain't funny!!!! So I fill it up and the damn fuel pump burnt up! I towed it home. What a bitch!!

Now that is some luck. Hopefully you can have her back on the road soon. I've got a window the first two weeks of April to get the galant back on the road. We should hook up after that.

Hahahaha oh yea!!!!! Got the new pump on and she's running great!!!!

For about 2.5 miles!!!!! Going about 60 and I hear this noise. Had the window down and hear it a few more times. I get off the gas and boom. Look under and see oil pouring out the pan. Smelled like burnt rubber. Got it back home and there's a hole in my pan by some sweet dents. I'm not even really mad about it. I should of done the bottom end when I had it apart!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Live and learn!!

Looks like it really is 6bolt time! I'm hoping to start in on mine next week Thursday and have it road worthy by the end of the weekend. I'm thinking that might be optomistic considering she's been sitting in the drive for a year and a half. Maybe I'll get lucky. Someone on this board has to have some luck left.

Unfortunately with the way things were when you got the car, I probably would've pulled it all the way down. Too many iffy things to trust someone else's supposed "handywork". Sucks, but yeah so it goes.

I'd suggest either a 6 bolt bottom end swap, or a 2.4 bottom end out of a 94-98 galant. The 2.4 pistons will put up with 300-350hp and give you very nice throttle response and fuel economy. Just a thought.

yeah, I've never seen a rod in that condition before. Seen em seize and snap, but nothing like that. It was literally melted.

After seeing the piston pics, really check your valves over careful. It may even be worth pulling them out to check and make sure they're straight. They definitely made contact.

Dear God!!!! I'm thinking clogged oil passage at that journal??? Actually, it would make more sense if it was still getting plenty of lube, but there was a burr or the like grinding on the crank/bearing/rod whatever. Oil allows it to keep spinning, builds heat as friction increases and kaboom! Scary to think that the rod was in the 2000* range when that happened blink.gif.

Chris, I'm building a small metal lathe, but on a very part-time basis. The bed is the only thing built at the moment.

well it would probly get some oil from sloshing through the pan. would make sense if the oil passage in the crank was plugged.

That's the ugliest mess of a thrown rod I've ever seen. Well at least its really really broken so you won't feel the need to try to fix it and end up here again in a couple months. I guess the wife will just have to wait rolleyes.gif .
