Engine running funny, I need help Options

Quick and dirty, folks. Revved engine up to 7k while accelerating, and a little past 7, it started hesitating like with a rev limiter, and after that the engine has ran really weird. It feels like a miss in the engine, but its not jerky. Just really weak. And it sort of growls instead of purrs. Very hard to describe.

Anyhow, it ran like this until I stopped and turned the car off. On restart, everything was normal. That is until a while later when I revved it high again.

At first I thought I might have jumped timing, but obviously, that doesn't just go away, so I'm thinking maybe loose plug wire, cloged injector or fuel filter perhaps? Any help would be greatly appreciated and needed. Thanks.

Something else that may be helpful: there wasn't any smoke of any color from the exhaust during this, but there was a strange smell under the hood that I didn't recognize. Barbeque sauce, perhaps?
