Has anyone ever heard of or tried cutting the rear balance shaft off instead of replacing the shaft? Got to looking at it, and it seems like it would work, but maybe someone has more info than I on the topic.

I've heard that people have done that with good results. You might have to cut a couple of grooves into either side of the part you are going to use so you can get a wrench on it to tighten the oil pump driven gear bolt and the sprocket nut.
