Well, If you pull the oil return tube all together it may give you room to put a small magnet up to the inside of the hole while you drill and or re-tap it for a larger bolt.
I think I would personally rather drop the pan and make sure no shaving get down in to the oil where they could be sent through the engine and possibly ruin it. Some things are just a pain in the A$$ if you want to do them right. I know that almost everytime that I've tried a short-cut it screwed something up causing me to do more work in the end than I would have if I did it right the first time.
