We did a run from 2000RPM in 2nd gear. The knock climbed to 19 counts until the boost came on. At that point the knock came back down.

The sluggish action of the engine alone would keep me from doing this in the real world and the knock was on it's way back down anyway. So I feel that when I pound on it at anywhere from 3500RPM and above I'll be just fine at these boost levels.

It also seemed to be knocking worse in lower gears(1st and 2nd) with 3rd being very clean. With the last motor the knock would be at 43 from 2500rpm to 3200rpm pretty much no matter what. If He got into it and the knock went up, it stayed up. The other night on the new block, starting at 2000ish in 2nd the knock rose up to 19 counts somewhere between 3000 and 3500 and fell down to 10 by 4500 where it stayed all of the way through. I consider that a HUGE step forward.

Quick Update:

About 1000 miles now

Passenger rear brake pads & rotor replaced with the slides re-lubricated

Moroso Spiral muffler and Road Race dual tip fully installed with a quieter low to mid throttle volume . (The external dump from the front makes up for it on full boost though)

Able to run upwards of 24 psi with low knock levels. 22 psi with nearly no knock. all on BP 93 octane through the spiral muffler.

HP levels seem to be in a range to possibly hit my desired 11.9x on the street tune.

So far I'm VERY happy with the combination. I still need to do a few small clean-up items like mount the new coolant over flow bottle, hook-up the boost gage light and clean a mouse nest out of the HVAC somewhere.

If everything continues to go well I plan to get to the dyno within a few weeks to make sure it's dialed in. My main grief right now is that the dual ball bearing turbo is not hitting full spool until about 4500RPM. It's costing me mucho time in the first gear of a hard pull. I feel we may be able to modify A tune for this issue. Before the stock like tune was put in, my turbo was almost always spooled up using the strokers chip. So it can be done. It may not be healthy since it makes the entire turbine section red hot. So it may just be a race only tune/chip.

Project Date: 3.30.07-1250mi.

Some intuitive tuning and minor maintenance has brought full boost on board at approximately 3900RPM now! That's about a 600 to 900RPM improvement over what we were seeing. We have figured out Mitsubishi's tuning trick to shorten spool time...very cool. NCGalant has been excellent to work with and very energized on my project. He's nearly as persistant as I am and always seems to be thinking of ways that may help the cause. biggthumpup.gif

NC has smoothed the lower maps to make my daily driving seem as stock as possible, but we owe most of that to the original Mitsubishi tune. We then concentrated on refining the tune in the upper maps for HP and for it to come on as quickly as possible. NC adjusted the timing maps and we leaned out the fuel maps at these levels. We didn't go overboard. The Air Fuel Ratio is still a bit rich and safe at 11.20:1 in the most extreme and dangerous map (WOT & Full boost). This has made 22 psi as high as we can go on BP 93 octane fuel without going higher than say 9 counts of knock at times. All this was done on a cooler night, so warmer temperatures should mean slower/but safer tune as the air density decreases.

To be honest though, this thing is starting to get scary. laying into the boost, watching the boost, RPM, oil pressure and the road as the car goes from say 90mph to 130mph in the very short order...It's making me a little uneasy to say the least. Hauling a$$ it is!

Problem now is that the stock, single synchro transmission does not want to shift up at the 8000-8500redline the motor wants to wind up to. It literally takes at least a full second or more to change gears without grinding them. Darryl uses double synchros on all gears just fine up in the 9k RPM range from what he tells me. I already have the double synchro 2nd and it looks like I can get a special 3rd and 4th gear with double synchros from TRE for about $375 plus shipping. I'm going to look into this, because all of this power with slow gear changes doesn't make much sense. Right now the thing looks like a Yo-Yo going down the road. biggrin.gif

I still need to clean the HVAC out and install the coolant over-flow, but the boost gage light is repaired.

Glad to hear it Marcus! biggthumpup.gif Can't wait to see it eat on thee Dyno, and even better the dragstrip!!

When I was picking up my chip from NC this week, we got to talking about your car. Very smart guy and was, as you said, excited about your car! Hopefully some of what he learned will help my "tiny turbo" car! tongue.gif

More test driving...
Trying to re-learn my driving skills...
This thing just does not want to shift quickly!

With such big spaces of time between shifts boost has to re-spool and I'm loosing a lot of ground. I'm not sure that I can get over 100mph in the 1/4 which isn't a whole lot better than stock. I mean I'm doing it in third gear, but it's too slow for all the mods. Dragged down by the transmission and my driving for now.

Here's a pic just for kicks: biggrin.gif
