I started working on the 97 Gst I bought my wife this weekend. I'm pulling the motor so I start to take the halfshafts out. For a 97 the axle nuts were extremly rusty. I finally get the nuts off and the spline section of the halfshaft is totally seized to the hub. I tried heat and a sledge hammer and nothing. Needless to say I destroyed the threads on the half shafts! I ended up pulling the whole hub off just to get the halfshafts out of the way.
So I pull the motor out and I am suprized to see several bolts missing! The guy I bought it from said it ran and had a fresh bottom end on it. He must of takin me for a fool!! First off I look at the timing belt and it's two teeth off from time. Then im looking at the tensioner and the part that the tensioner piviots don't even have a bolt in it to hold it to the block!!!! I notice several bolts missing. I pull the head and I see a bent valve, and two little nicks on top of the piston where two other valves have hit!!!!l I found a head for it I'm going to get next weekend. I took pics of all this and will try to post them soon. -------------------- 1991 GSX

yeah, I've never seen a rod in that condition before. Seen em seize and snap, but nothing like that. It was literally melted.
After seeing the piston pics, really check your valves over careful. It may even be worth pulling them out to check and make sure they're straight. They definitely made contact. -------------------- 1978 Mustang II King Cobra

Dear God!!!! I'm thinking clogged oil passage at that journal??? Actually, it would make more sense if it was still getting plenty of lube, but there was a burr or the like grinding on the crank/bearing/rod whatever. Oil allows it to keep spinning, builds heat as friction increases and kaboom! Scary to think that the rod was in the 2000* range when that happened .
Chris, I'm building a small metal lathe, but on a very part-time basis. The bed is the only thing built at the moment. -------------------- QUOTE (gsxracer80 @ Oct 31 2006, 12:41 AM)

well it would probly get some oil from sloshing through the pan. would make sense if the oil passage in the crank was plugged.

That's the ugliest mess of a thrown rod I've ever seen. Well at least its really really broken so you won't feel the need to try to fix it and end up here again in a couple months. I guess the wife will just have to wait .
