Thinking about adding a sub and upgrading the front speakers. Did my brother's 90's Lazer back in the day and it sounded really good. Had 5 1/2" mids in the door and a set of 3 1/2" and 1" tweaters in the dash with a 12 in the hatch.

Was thinking of 2 routes, first one would be a removable box/sub amp in the hatch with a single 10" so I can ditch it for track days. Second would be replacing the stock rear speakers with 8" subs..

Anybody got any ideas they can share?

I would go the removeable box route. I've played around with those rear speakers a lot, and I've never been happy with the sound. It has a lot to do with the direction they face. Put a box in the hatch, and play with the positioning (bounce the sound off the back, off the glass, etc.) and see what soundst the best. Plus, you can't beat the ability to shed that weight at the track.

I ran a similar setup in my Talon. I had a set of Infinity Kappa components up front, and a sub box in the the back. Driving this combination was a RockfordFosgate 4 channel sub. The front two channels ran the components, while the bridged rear channels drove the sub. Mix with a puree'd lemon sauce and enjoy.

I agree with the consensus of the group. Go with one 10" in a box you can remove. You can get a pretty good response, too with just one 10" in that car.

And look at that! I have a JL 250/1 amp for sale!!!! PM me if interested.

I've got a Pioneer 50w x4 deck with 6.5in Pioneer 2-ways in the doors and in the rear hatch with 4inch Pioneer 2-way tweeters on the dash. I've also got 2 12inch Pioneer single voice coil subs in a sealed box with individual chambers wired with a 760watt Pioneer amp in stereo pushing 300watts x2 RMS to the 400watt max subs.

It sounds pretty good IMO. I'm more of a sound quality guy rather than SPL but it's still quite loud.

Get ya one of them little bazooka tubes, it has an amp already in it. Although I dont know how good they sound. It looks like a pretty decent idea. The problem ive always thought about was there isnt enough trunk depth in an AWD to put a sub box. Which is why, if I do anything itll be one of them little bass tube things.

Man, I have had 3 12 inch JL audios in the back of my talon. I had set it up for SPL drags. I hit 145 db with it.
You just have to know what your doing when you sqweeze it in there, LOL. A lil KY helped mine in.

Thanks for the input guys...

turbohcar
Did you cut the door panels t get the 6.5's in the doors?

JBone
I'll pass on the amp, I've got a Pioneer GM-X702 amp, pushes 200W continuous bridged with a stiffening cap. Thanks though!

The Iron Goat
Did you go with the 5 1/2 or 6 1/2 Kappas?

BudmannG
Nice box, and 145 db is impressive. Too bad my hearing can't take that anymore!

I was always mainly sound quality...but I did like the "shock and awe" bass every once in a while when I wanted to screw with somebody! biggthumpup.gif

I think I'm going to go with the removable box/amp combo with a 10" Kicker. I'll have to play with the box to clear the spare since I can't afford to get rid of it.

I had the 6.5" Kappas. I did a pretty extensive modification to the door panels in my install, but I don't believe it's a must.

But please God, whatever you do, DO NOT GET A BAZOOKA TUBE!!! I will build you a box if it comes right down to it. tongue.gif

Bazooka tubes are crap and not worth the money or time to look at it.

That settles it, I'm going to get a bazooka........Iron Goat now has to build me a box!!! Wow that was easy!! biggrin.gif

Seriously, I love Kicker speakers. I've had a 10" in my truck going on 6 years and love it. My old S10 had 6.5" midbass in the doors and they rocked! Come to think it...I still have those midbass. I wonder if those will fit??? I do have an extra set or door panels to play with...hmmmm

In my car I run 3 way speakers in the front, not sure what size but a little bigger than stock as they were a bitch to put in and in the back I have 2-way 6x9's. In the hatch I have a 10" rockford fosgate p2 that only pushes 300 watts RMS. To match the sub perfectly I run a 300 watt RMS amp and I have a Pioneer head unit to power the other speakers. Honestly, my system sounds incredible inside the car. The 10" delivers the perfect combination of deep and clear bass at the same time instead of that obnoxious garbled and overpowering bass most subs output. I also have my sub in a bandpass box which is the best type of box for a hatchback and it sits damn near up against the glass.

I honestly think that a single 10" is the best sub to put into a DSM. It is nice and clear bass, yet it still hits like a mother f-----. I just have mine grabbing onto the spare tire with a velcro so that it stays firmly, yet it easy to remove when I need to hand somebody their ass.

Get a single 10" in a bandpass box and some decent speakers and you will be in love. biggthumpup.gif

No, I did not have to modify the door cards in order to make them fit. The 6.5 Pioneers fit perfectly in the doors, the rears however were a different story. 6.5inch is supposed to be the stock size for front and rear in my car (some came with 6x9s in the rear instead so check before you buy a set). The same size 6.5s that fit in the doors did not fit in the rears well. I had to drill a new holes about 1/8th of an inch out from where the stock ones.

BTW, I put all my speakers in the stock location and stock brackets.
