Well well well guess what! I got the turbo kit on my RS. But its not running right. For some reason Ive got a check engine light on for the MAP sensor. Its saying to high of voltage. Yes I do have the missing link on it. But the CEL was on before the missing link was put on. Im thinking the S-AFC is doing it. Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated. Anywho with the MAP freaking out the ECU is dumping way too much fuel so I had to put the stock fuel pump back in just so it would run. Also when it spools up it seems to be loosing boost somewhere either the couplers or out the BOV I cant seem to place it. I figure first thing is first fix the MAP problem then I can get to the boost creep after finding that replace the fuel pump and start tuning again. OH KOU I do still want the side mount IC if its still for sale.
I did purchase a wide band O2 with a digital read out on it so I could tune the car to perfection. It will log 44 min. and will hook up to a computer for close analysis. Cant wait for this toy to come in. Well if anyone has any ideas or would like to check it out with me please let me know. I NEED BOOST! |

Im no guru or anything, but if you have a boost leak after the MAF you would probably be running rich and may even throw a code. That is why they tell you to recirculate the BOV. Your MAF is reads how much air is passing through it. It then adjusts the gas mixture to match (approx.). If you are leaking air after the MAF then you computer is expecting more air then you are getting. I would approach this problem with fix the mechanical problem (leaking) first. Then if that doesn't fix it, try the electrical. It may all be steming from your boost leak. I could be wrong though.

Well thanks for the idea but I dont have a 4g63 I have a 420A and it doesnt have MAF. So Im back to square one. Im going to bypass the S-AFC tomorrow and datalog it with my new toy. I got the LM-1 finally its a Wideband O2 Bosch O2 sensor with a digital read out and logger. Then I will go back and re install the S-AFC just in case something was wrong the first time. Never know nothing will be ruled out. Im going to wait on trying to get boost until I get my fuel setup fixed. This way I dont lean it out or wash it out.
KEEP BRAIN STORMING PLEASE IM STILL NEW SO ANY IDEAS WOULD HELP! Thank you. |

The 420A doesn't have a MAF sensor? I thought all modern fuel injected cars had MAF sensors. How does the computer control the engine? How does it read air flow and vacumm? I know most GMs have MAF and my wife's Neon has a MAF. What are you hooking you S-AFC to? Not doubting you though. It's just something I didn't realize. Good luck with the tuning.
Just a thought. Some how you have to measure Air flow to match the fuel flow. If it is measured before the turbo (no matter what the sensor is) and you are leaking air ( whether couplers or uncirculated BOV) you are going to run rich and your car probably will not perform its best. I would still fix the leak before setting up you wideband or S-AFC. You said, "Im going to wait on trying to get boost until I get my fuel setup fixed. This way I dont lean it out or wash it out. " How can you adjust your fuel settings if you boost is inconsistant and incorrect? I wouldn't recommend driving around boosting the hell out of your car until you get the fuel and Air set up, but fix the leak first. Re-check all of your connections, from the exhaust manifold all the way to the intake manifold. Make sure they are all tight and aligned. Then tune. -------------------- Jarrad Asay

Like he said in the original post he uses a MAP (manifold air pressure) sensor.
I wish I could help you out Dion, but MAP sensors, turbocharging NA cars, and 420a's are all unfamiliar territory for me. I think JasonESI-T could have some answers for you. You might want to try emailing him. |

I think its my BOV that is bleeding my boost or the connector right out of the turbo. I have goe through and aligned them (could be better not perfect) but all the connectors are tight. Im looking at getting new silicone (red) connectors here real soon. But im still not sure why my BOV would be bleeding it off. Its a Turbo xs RFL (very loud) I have even increased the spring pressure all the way. Tell me this why when its idling I can move the piston in the BOV with my fingure? I shouldnt be able to do that should I? Should I put a different vac up to it? Like maybe straight from the manifold with nothing t'd from it? A vac. line is a vac. line isnt it?

No a vacumm line is not a vacumm line. The BOV should be ran of a line directly from the intake manifold. Ive never turbo'ed a NA before, but the BOV operates based on Manifold vacumm if I understand it correctly. I could be wrong. Even if I am, i don't think you should be able to easily move the BOV. Most MBC's T off of the BOV hose, but It shouldn't really have anything else T'ed off of it. What vacumm hose do you have it operating off of?

I now have it off the manifold directly the 2 stage MBC is not hooked up as of now until I get the rest going. I did disconnect the MAP from the S-AFC and hooked the MAP up stock. Well doing that so far got rid of the CEL. So now Im going to reinstall the 255 fuel pump and SFMU. Im getting closer I know I am.

It shouldn't matter if you can move the bypass valve while the car is idling. It should be loose because the diphragm is sampling vacuum. When it sees positive pressure aka. boost it should make the valve stiff so none of the pressurized air leaks out. But when the throttle plate shuts and the manifold is reading vacuum, this should make the valve loose so the pressurized air can escape out the valve instead of surging against the compressor.

you put the stiffest spring in the BOV and it's still flapping in the breeze? that must be one weak BOV or you've got some kickass vacuum. last car I've known to suck that hard was my girl's.....oh snap! that monster is doing that lady! (inside joke)

Ok well went ahead and moved the vac. for BOV to intake manifold but In not going to try and hit anyboost because I dont have the FMU or the SAFC installed so no fuel supplement. So Im installing the FMU this weekend hopefully. Anyone wanna help please feel free to let me know the more the merryer. Then we could knock out alot of items and troubleshooting.
Well this morning I got another CEL but it wasnt the MAP it was just a too rich CEL. So alittle confused Its all pretty stock except for the Missing Link. I mean stock Fuel pump stock regulator S-afce isnt hooked up to the MAP. Some crazy stuff. Anyways if you want to help please contact me at 309-531-4536 or 309-452-4715. Thanks Later |

Ok here is the update. I still have the S-AFC disconnected but reinstalled the 255 walbro and installed the S-FMU with a 12:1 plate. It runs better but still rich. Im waiting on the filter for my Missing link. I guess the filter that was but on fell out and thats why it was so loud and sounded like a big vaccum leak. having this will help some of my rich problem because it will help to stablize the atmospheric pressure or something. Also I ordered some new silicone pipe connectors the rubber ones would get to soft and leak.
I still need the 1g SMIC Kou so if we could meet up sometime would be great. We seem to be missing each other everytime. I will be at the Twin City Cruise night at K's in Bloomington on the 11th. If you want we could meet there. As always everyone is invited it is 1980 cars/trucks and newer night. SO everyone would fit in just perfect. Let me know if you need to know how to get there. Later. If anyone is or knows someone running a Missing Link could you see if the have some extra filter they usually give you enough for 3 filters. Thanks again! |

I'll be out your way at least once this week and I've still got that intercooler for you. Normally I can't make the meets with my work schedule though. Give me a call or PM though and we'll make sure we get you that IC.

Well do you think you might be able to make it to the CII/Sangamon Valley show on the 25th? Like I said I have every intention on going myself. Let me know. Also I usually have Sundays off if you think that might help.
