Personally, I would never rebuild a motor without taking it to a machine shop to have it checked out and cleaned up.

Agreed.
BudmannG
OK, What about a balance shaft removale kit? What all besides the kit will I need? And maybe water pump?
90GSX
I would put a new water pump on since your that far into it anyway, and not have to worry about it again.

As for the manual tensioner precision has, he explained to me that you need to run without timing belt covers, cause you are constantly having to check and adjust the tension. I opted for a auto tensoner from the dealer since i wanted to leave my covers on and not have to mess with it. But my tensioner did cost 120 bucks, so i guess its your choice there.

For the balance shaft removal, there are a kits you can buy, or if you want a cheap fix, you can cut the rear shaft from the oil pump drive and not hook the belt on the front balance shaft and your good to go. Thats what Precision did to mine.
BudmannG
I will probly go with an auto tensioner. I will search for a balance shaft removal kit. Precisions way just don't sound safe to me.
99Spyder
Tensioner $76 from SBR
BudmannG
Hey thanks spider! That is a pretty good price, cheaper than what I thought it would be.
If I do the balance shafts what gaskets will I have to buy? Or does the kit come with it?
natedogg
Bud, please check out www.vfaq.com, contact the vendors or search our archives. We don't mind answering the more technical questions, but a little research will go a long way in answering the simpler questions.
BudmannG
sad.gif Nate you hurt my feelings, I thought you loved me? tongue.gif

I did what you said, checked vfaq. There is alot of shit to do the balance shafts. blink.gif
The Iron Goat
Bud, that balance shaft is the smallest fish in your pond with the list of things you've got posted to do. You're looking at a lot of hours of labor. I'm not saying you shouldn't do this, in fact, I encourage such acts of insanity, but just be aware that there's A LOT of effort to be put forth here.

And don't worry about Nate. He should be more than friendly from now on. I "serviced his oil" last night. Then we had a big bowl of popcorn. And hugs.
BudmannG
I will be pulling the motor from the Fireball today.

Now with it out of the car I am going to change the timing belt. And maybe the balance shafts, I might as well since it is out. This might not go back in until next weekend.

WOOO HOOOO time to buy parts, Just found out the money came in.

biggrin.gif Didn't mean to come off harsh. I just think that resources like the vfaq website can answer a lot of questions and I think they should be used to their fullest extent. When I first got into DSM's. I read through just about every vfaq on the site. I shit you not. You'll learn more about your car reading through those than you might expect.

Not meening to go off topic but are there any other sites besides vfaq and dsmtuners that offer technical and other help? I have read just about all of the stuff on vfaq but wanna keep learning.
BudmannG
I went to get a hoist and they didn't have one! Damnit!

dsmtalk.com is another very large site comparable to dsmtuners.
BudmannG
Here it is guys,
I just wanted to let everyone know. I am being lazy! I still haven't got the motor out and it's freakin cold out. No heated garage or floor. So it may be awhile before I get to it.

I did want to let all know that I have ordered everything I need to get it running. It all should be here by tomorrow! So I guess I will start on it tomorrow, tongue.gif . Maybe?
BudmannG
biggthumpup.gif Well guys I know it has been a while since I have said anything about my car and what is going in or on it. So here it is a little teaser for you guys to gander at.

Project Ghost! wacko.gif

Wow, looking really good...Altho still got that yellow bumper, not so sure about that....

Turbo setup looking good....I've heard mixed things about the problems with running no intake pipe, just filter-compressor housing, but it sure as hell looks good....

This thing will be a 'budget beast' for sure...

BTW: Purple and yellow? why tongue.gif
BudmannG
Well..................... Purple and Yellow are my two favorite colors. I have also implemented some Blue in there also. All of the IC piping should be powered Yellow when I am done. All of my couplers are blue, AFPR is blue. I have one red thing under the hood and that is the MBC that I got from miami.
And by the way miami thanks for the IC and piping it will come in handy for that turbo. biggthumpup.gif

Oh and by the way, It won't have yellow bumpers when it pulls out the driveway. I am in the stressing situation of installing a body kit on it. And I am not faring well with that at all. It is kicking my ass! But it will be done! ph34r.gif
Chicago_DSM
Whatever your preference...This will definitely be 'unique', that's for sure...Purple and Yellow engine bay in a white car would not normally be my first thought for a good idea, but the fact that your doing it b/c its your favorite colors adds some purpose and background into the idea, so it becomes much more attractive
SCCA Stang
cool video... looks like your project is well on it's way.... maybe I can make it down there sometime and give you a hand one of these sundays when I am off of work..... BTW what turbo is that????
BudmannG
It is a Garrett .50 trim. And thanks for the props man. Here are some more pics for you to gander at.

I suppose DSMtalk is comparable, but in IMHO DSMtuners is better. I like the mods, the members, and the whole atmosphere of DSMtuners. Also, help is always available, as long as you play by the rules... Luda runs a tight ship.
SCCA Stang
looks good bud... can't wait to see it in person
black92_tsi_awd
Looks good. Did you blast that intake and cyl head to get it so clean. Mine still looked like ass after I cleaned it, so I painted it like everything else.

Still not sure about the purple... cool.gif Looks like a slick job though.
BudmannG
No, I didn't blast the intake. I used Sea Foam and a brush to clean the intake inside and out. I let it soak on the inside for a couple of days. You would not believe all the black crap that came out of it.

The head was refreshed, that is why it looks so damn good. I picked it up for $163.00 from Reichert Engines & Machine Shop (217-725-2481) in Springfield. That was for the valve job, resurface, and pressure check. He said that he can do the port matching also. That will be done to the next head that I send to him.
BudmannG
Here is a list of the thing that I have purchased for this new project of mine. I am probably forgetting something.
  • 3" Apexi Dunk Catback exhaust "from belittle"
  • 3" Downpipe " Built by Asiankid"
  • 255 walbro lph fuel pump
  • 850cc injectors
  • DSM Link
  • Eprom ECU
  • 3" GM Mafs
  • JDM Afpr
  • Fidanza flywheel
  • Sony Vaio for DSM Link
  • Hallman mbc "Thanks to akamiami"
  • FMIC & Piping 2 1/2" "Thanks to akamiami" "Asiankid will be doing the welding on this also"
  • Tubular exhaust manifold "Thanks to Asiankid"
  • Tubular O2 housing
  • Lunar boost gauge
  • Lunar A/F gauge
  • Turboxs bov
  • .50 Trim Garrett Turbo
  • 44mm Wastegate "Work done by Asiankid"
  • Braided oil feed and return lines
Like I said before I did alot of soul searching on this setup and it was and is in my budget. So now all that is left is getting it put together.
biggthumpup.gif
turbohcar
What's up with the "JDM FPR"? Is there a difference?
BudmannG
The JDM AFPR is the one I bought off of ebay last year. Nothing special, I have to use it first and then see if it fails on me. Or acts like the 1G did when it was on there.
If it acts up I will let everyone know about it. And then I am after a good AFPR.
I in my own mind think that the 1G was an ecu error. I think it would run until the ecu got hot and then started messing things up. It only happened to me on long drives. Like last year at SCDC. I got to just this side of Lincoln and it started to do the sputter thing to me. And that was the first experience with it doing that.
Trust me Bret if it acts up, I will pitch it where it stops me. Then I will be on the phone or the net for a good one. And I will not cheap out on the part the second time around.
turbohcar
Eh, I wasn't trying to tell you to get something else. I honestly thought that you were talking about a Japanese O.E. FPR rather than the one you bought off of Ebay. I thought for a second it was a mod I hadn't heard about or something. Good luck and let us know how it turns out. It looks like you've got a pretty nice list there!
BudmannG
Hey turbohcar I didn't take it the way think I did. I was just saying I have my doubts right now about it.

Well I am in the FUCKED position again. I am working on getting a timing cover and a starter plate that goes to the 2g awd. I have two 1g starter plates but that won't work. So I still can't put the motor in.
I have called every where I can think of. Belittle has both parts but that means I will have to drive to Iowa again. And that is a long ass boring drive!

Because of my new found problems I am putting the 94 Bonneville SSEI back on the road. Then I will have two cars that run damn good! The Bonny will become the daily driver for sure. The Talon is going to be garaged from now on. It will only be brought out on special ocassions from now on. This way matbe I can save a little money in parts!

Let me know what you guys think, or if you can help me out with the parts I need! Thanks!
black92_tsi_awd
Hey Bud, I've got my old cover. It's a little rough but if your desperate to get it on the road....
BudmannG
Can you get me a pic so I can see how bad. I hate to be pickie, but if it's worse off than mine than there is no reason to send it.

My hurry now is- I just opened my mail and I have to have this moved in ten days. My city police department sent me a notice. The fine will be a hundred and fifty for every car that is setting here. I don't have the extra money to pay for a fine right now.
black92_tsi_awd
I PMed you some picts.

It's free if you can pick it up (Peoria Area), or just pay the shipping and I'll mail it.
BudmannG
I will see if asiankid can pick it up for me. Thanks man i greatly appreciate that. Mine is like split in four different places. And it has belt marks on it from where they where rubbing.
black92_tsi_awd
Just pm me what you want to do.
BudmannG
mitsu90
BudmannG
Thanks Chris I got the cover today. It is in great shape.
black92_tsi_awd
No problem...glad I could help!
BudmannG
More freaking problems!

First I get it to run and idle. That was the good part of the day! While it was running I pulled the ground jumper wire off, Because I had to jump it. And the freaking thing dies! The damn altenator is not charging! And I blew a freaking oil line to the cooler also. This thing is really pissing on me!!!! realmad.gif

And plus I don't understand the damn DSM Link program. No one around close to turn to for help either. IDK what to do now.

I guess the first thing I will do is take the Fing altenator back to where I got it. Because it was bought right before I pulled the motor. So it is new!!!!
BudmannG
huh.gif Alright here we go!

My car is up and running now. I have been having problems getting it to wot. I was puzzled for at least a week about this and have posted logs on dsm link forums. No one could tell me why it would stutter and fall on it's face at wot. I have messed around trying to get the o2 sensor to work, also. I found out that was an error on my part while hooking up the stutter box.
But back to the stutter on wot! I was out tuning tonight and drove to my inlaws out in the country. The car ran strong tonight, actually better than it has since I got it running. I left there (inlaws) house and did a strong 2nd gear pull. And OMG I think I have a horse. It didn't fall on it's face or stutter. So I am like maybe 2 miles from home and all of a sudden this thing starts running like I ran out off fuel. I told myself before I left town to put gas in it. That is the thought I had while it was doing this to me. I let up on the gas pedal so as to not use to much and get as far as I can towards my house.
Amazingly I made it all the way home just by feathering the gas pedal. I pull in the drive at my house and expected it to die, no go it set there and idled. So I pop the hood and start looking at ic pipping. All the pipping was on and snug still. I just happen to glance at the real nice deal ebay bought FPR! That SOB was at zero and no fuel pressure. I pulled the vacuume line to check and see if it was that. No that's not it, then the car dies!
I found my problem! Just so you know you get what you pay for on ebay! Don't ever, and I mean ever buy a JDM FPR from anyone on ebay regardless of the price and your finances. I have learned this the hard way! If it looks to good to be true than it is.
I did make one great pull before it died on me. No harm no foul here about the fpr. I just take it as a lesson learned. I would hate for someone to make the same mistake I did. biggthumpup.gif

Now I need to buy a good fpr. Anyone have any advise on one that is not going to break the bank and still feed the fuel?

This is my update!
