AWD DSM 1
That's right... I'm back. So what if it's just another broke ass DSM cluttering up my garage right now? It won't be for long.... I promise.
mitsu90
it's one hell of a car

AWD DSM 1
Hiding deep in the corn fields of Iowa, emerging as if from thin air. At first sight, appearing to be only an illusion, a dirty but elaborate trick put on by the spymaster himself. A double take assures me that it is real, as real as a heart attack. Straight, sleek lines, a low stance… as if ready to pounce on the first prey that walks by. The time is coming soon enough…

Ok, first off… 8 hours in a 85 3/4 ton 4x4 is hell on a person. The rewards were well worth the pain though. What exactly is that you ask? My new project…. DSM KLR 1.

Start with a cherry dark green 1993 Eagle Talon Tsi AWD with a stock 4 bolt rear and two piston caliper big brakes. Add a six bolt motor, a full GAB suspension, 2g wheels, 3” turbo back exhaust, relocated battery with cutoff switch, Greddy turbo timer, Walbro 255 fuel pump, and bake at 350 for 1 hour….

Goal is to turn this car into one of the nicest looking and deadliest street Talon’s in the Peoria area. This is the car I’ve wanted ever since I sold my 93 GSX almost 5 years ago now. A lot of talk, I know. I’m full of talk… this time I’m ready to do some walking also… hopefully, if all goes well it will be at slo-pony day in May.

Pics to follow…

Looking for a turbo, ECU, gasket kit, timing kit, and arp head studs at the moment.

I can knock two off that list. Turbo, and ARP head studs. biggthumpup.gif

Which reminds me I need to get those studs on the exchange.

Congrats Rob! Glad to see you in a car you like again. biggthumpup.gif

So isn't a DSM killing Talon kind of like self mutilation? Good luck with the project!

Well... the plates were originally ordered for my 96 cobra, but I never even got to put them on that car before I sold it. Put them on the Cavi as a joke, and to make sure I kept them.

Now it's kind of a reminder of all the car's I've slaughtered in my quest to get here and now.

Looks like your going to need some 720cc injectors and a turbo upgrade...

AWD DSM 1
First order of business is to get it running. 720's will come later. I've got to sort though the boxes and see what else is missing. I know I've got some extra parts too, so those will probably be going up on the exchange and/or E-bay.

Got the head studs taken care of, still looking for the following -

Turbo - 14b or 16g
ECU 91-94 non-E-prom is fine

Also, if anyone has new gaskets or timing parts laying around they want to get rid of, let me know.

Give me a call. I've got my re-capped 92 ECU that I shouldn't need anymore. biggthumpup.gif

Great shape, new caps last year.

Well, crap...

Finally got around to unpacking the boxes, and found that my motor has a burnt piston.

Back to square one. Anybody got a motor for sale? dry.gif
Chicago_DSM
You want a DSM that will own the streets of Peoria, and your looking to throw on a 14b laugh.gif

Motors shot, big deal, time for some Ross/Eagle forged internals, bored block, ported and built head, 50trim or something bigger and ball bearing (3052), SMIM, 272 cams, fmic, dsmlink and 1000cc injectors....Ya know, something like that tongue.gif

Honestly, a 14b just won't cut it....Maybe for breaking in the new motor tho....

I have one with a spun bearing I'll sell you at a fair price.

If I had 10g's burning a hole in my pocket I would. 14b is pleanty for now.

Folks have achieved lower ETs with a 14b than most of us will see in our efforts. Some people choose to find a better way to hit the nail rather than just get a bigger hammer. We call those "smart" people. Acheiving similar results with less money.

Few other things I'm looking for -

Stock BOV and Tube
Stock Fuel Rail and FPR
Good clutch and Flywheel (upgrades are an option here)

ncgalant
I've got a stock pressure plate you can have.
Chicago_DSM
Sure, low 12's have been done with 14b's, I just misunderstood your goal...I kinda thought you wanted a Street 'killer' dsm, as even tho dsm's can run 12's on 14b's, right there your only matched up to stock ws6's/03 cobra's....If you want a super quick car after the rebuild, then by all means show us what you can do with the stock turbo...I plan on keeping this 14b until it can't take anymore (20psi range)
AWD DSM 1
10's have actually been done with a 14b. I'll be happy if I get into the 12's with it, then it will be time to move on to bigger and better things.
AWD DSM 1
This group is awesome... In about a week I think I'll have 90% of this laundry list wrapped up. Special thanks to Nate, kicks, and miami - I should have the ARP's, ECU, BOV, FPR & rail, clutch and turbo taken care of. I think I'm going to go fidenza on the flywheel... Goat, let me know when you get yours, I'm thinking of going the same route (E-bay).

Still looking for a BOV tube.

Also, I think I'm going to order a Topline rebuild kit and do the motor. I'm probably going to skimp a little on stuff like the head gasket and timing belt, with the intent of building a forged motor in the meantime. Mods will be minimal for a while, so I don't think I'll have tons of trouble. Who knows, may be eating my words in a few months. biggrin.gif Who has had motor work done recently, and where did you take your stuff?
mitsu90
I hear they do good work let double check the BOV tube should have one from the auto.

I took my crank to be turned, and my flywheel to be machined at Kalina Machine on Main in Peoria. Did a good job and turnaround was quick (24 and 4 hours)

i would get a hold of retter and see if he has time right now to rebuild the bottom end. i know he has about three cars right now that need to get done on top of his other job. he is mitsu77 on here... i would shoot him a PM. he can also get you the flywheel and such if you need.
AWD DSM 1
I'll be putting everything together myself, just need a machine shop. I know there have been a few that have had bad luck at Kalina, but convinience is winning out on this one. I'm probably not doing anything more than a stock rebuild now, so I'm not too worried. Thanks for the input everyone!

I've had the flywheel for a while now. Looks to be top-notch. Kicks and I were looking at it, and he noticed a revision in the machining on the main body that should help to prevent any breaking around the bolt ring in the center. Go for it, buddy!
AWD DSM 1
I'll probably do that next week!

Couple other issues that have arrisen that require parts. This WAS an ABS car, the ABS unit was missing, so I've decided to switch over to non-ABS. I found a non-ABS proportioning vavle, but need the brake lines that go from the valve to each front wheel.

Also need a passenger side front A/C line, and a steel front bumper - bumper cover was being held on by 3 zip ties and 2 bolts... blink.gif
Mitsu 77
I've got a non-abs car with AC stuff still intacked you could hore parts off of.
AWD DSM 1
Mitsu 77 - I might have to take you up on that... you're in bloomington, right?
AWD DSM 1
Anyone got a 1g aftermarket UICP they'd sell?
Mitsu 77
I am in Bloomington, but the car is in Colfax. Just let me know a time and well make a man-date.
AWD DSM 1
Well, finally got around to pulling the motor apart last night to inspect the burnt piston better. Discovered that the damage went through the first layer of rings, and melted a good chunk of the side of the piston, and left some scoring on the cylinder wall. What's worse, the melted chunks found their way around the rest of the motor, leaving pits and scratches on most of the bearings in the motor. I'm pretty sure the block will need bored, and the crank may even need turned. sad.gif

Been in contact with the seller, and we are curently trying to work something out.

I do have a spare block and crank, but it's got some surface rust starting on the cylinder walls, not sure if it can be honed out or not at this point. Basically, with what I've got, I'm looking at a complete rebuild.

I'm starting to think at this point that the better option may be to find a running motor to put in it at this point, but no luck at this point finding one.

Why do I like these cars so much again? ph34r.gif

I feel your pain...I was just to swap some bearing and call it a day.
Ended up doing almost a complete rebuild..and now I need $300 in tranny parts.

I a little tired of mine right now too...the only thing that keeps me going is the promise of boost on the horizon!! biggthumpup.gif

If it's just surface rust, it may hone out, it's probably worth a shot.
AWD DSM 1
Got the fidanza ordered yesterday around lunch time. Got a tracking number the same day! Seems like a really good place!

Now looking for some more parts to throw at it... let me know if anyone has this stuff!!!

3 gauge a-pillar pod
90 style oil cooler with lines and filter housing
2g MAS with intake pipe and filter
SAFC II

Realized the other day that the 1g MAS plug has already been replaced with a 2g one, so I figure I'll just go that route for now. It will give me some fuel control and better airflow, pleanty for the forseeable future.

Spent some time cleaning up the interior, it's really in good shape, minus one huge tear in the driver's seat. Also worked on removing some broken bolts for the front bumper that had been busted off.
black92_tsi_awd
Hey spy, if AWD DSM 1 doesn't want the gauges I might be interested in some/all of them. PM me a price if AWD DSM 1 passes...
turbohcar
Does that beast have some 550cc injectors in it already then? I noticed you posted that you had a 2G MAS, which will easily over-extend the measly stock 450's.

Nope... injectors will be on the list shortly no doubt. biggrin.gif
AWD DSM 1
Well, brought home what hopefully will be the heart donor for the Killer. Yet to check the motor out to make sure it's ok, but I'm crossing my fingers. Also took care of the 90 oil cooler on my list. Hopefully have a 2g MAS and a Gauge pod on the way shortly. Still looking for a SAFC.... Hopefully the project will be picking up some steam in the next few days.... cool.gif

Here's a question for you... GM MAFT or 2g MAS and SAFC? Looks like price is about the same....
