Damn. I thought I'd stir up some Cordova conversation.
Anyone?
I think I'm going tonight, pre-midnight mayhem...

So How did it go at Cordova? Got any new time slips?

Aug 30 2008, 01:14 PM
None to advertise. Got my second run around midnight. Someone blew a tranny all the way down the track. Plus the place was packed.
A 2.2 60' yielded a 13.19, I think, but with a trap of 111. The second one proved I should have finished my drivetrain work before taking the car out. *Laugh*
The transfer case with its front diff's mashed potatoes, I think. I was lucky to be able to drive it home.
All I knew when I launched (this new ROM has a launch control, with fuel cut at 5500, so I just sat there floored waiting for the light, then released the clutch) was that I was getting tire spin. I didn't get far and was still spinning and said screw it and went for second hoping for some hook-up. It was third gear before I was up and gone, and, right at my torque peak, I think, she was reving again. I THINK I felt some slight sideways slip implying my tires might have been spinning.
In retrospect, I assume the TC went virtually immediately, and I was all rear wheel drive. That slip in third gear may have been in the drivetrain and not wheelspin.
I get a nasty metal knock when turning the wheel and adding gas or lifting (changing momentum of the driveshaft, I guess), and tighter turns invoke a bit of a ratchet type sound. I was damn worried, but didn't have a clue how I was going to get home other than to see if I could get it there myself.
The front seemed to hunt a bit on the pavement when up around 70, so I drove her at about 65. Got home a bit before 2:00.
Today I find if I hit the gas a little hard the rpms go up but the car doesn't accelerate as much as it should and I hear a bit of a mess up front.
Transfer case? Bein' replaced anyway.
Axles? Damn, that'd suck, but we'll see.
Clutch? I don't really think so, but, again, we'll see.
I'm being optimistic but I'll find out later. I'm having Mitsu tear into it and that's where it sits right now.
I'm glad this didn't happen at autocross. That would have sucked a bit more. Longer drive and, missing another pass or two is one thing, but missing an event I went to would really suck.
Too much powah! LOL!

Yeah, T-case or center diff in the transmission would be my guess. Glad you made it home. I've had to make that same trip on three cylinders.

Ahhh patience... *Sigh*
Everyone's shipping by ground, and, since we're in Peoria freaking Illinois, any destination is what, five days away minimum?
Anyway, 2-piece driveshaft is in, rebuilt rear diff is done but won't ship until the TRE stage 4 TC is ready, supposedly Tuesday.
I decided to send away the TB and intake manifold, since everything had to sit, anyway, and haven't heard anything there yet.
The kicker is the new TC. Apparently it's going to require some serious break-in. Low speed driving for 20 minutes, sit an hour. More low-speed driving, let it sit, etc. Slowly working upwards, apparently, trying to ensure everything heats and sets well. Highway miles would heat it up too much and too long, apparently. And, definitely, no hard launches for 2K miles... Ouch. LOL
The good news is I should never break another TC! And, that was the goal.
I'm looking for another 15hp w/the ported TB and intake manifold with the 14 lbs less rotation mass on the driveshaft helping numbers, too. A shame this is all going to come together just in time for winter.
But, I'm going to put dedicated snows on her for this winter so I can be sure and drive her to complete break-ins and, well, to just enjoy!
That's all I have for now...

Parts are back and FINALLY being bolted on. I'm prayin' hard to be able to break in the new transfer case enough to handle a cruise to Normal for Mitsu Owner's Day Saturday AM!

I heard someone might be. You're likely a little late in getting in line, however. Check EvoM.
Otherwise, parts are on, needs a test drive, double-check fluids, and check for leaks. Break-in (I hope) begins tonight!

I've put about 25 miles on the new TC, etc. now. Should be able to get her to Mitsu Owners Day! Got a bad tire though. That sucks since there's so much tread left on the whole set... Grr...

In the past I've replaced 2 at a time. I don't think it's hurt the center diff running slightly different wheel heights front to back.

Thanks! She goes in for fluids change and leak check this week. With that odd wear on the inside of the passenger front, again, I'm going to have them go over the suspension with a fine-toothed comb, also.
Great to meet you, as well. Hope to see you at some events next year!

Oct 9 2008, 06:10 PM
Damn it's nice to have an Evo back under my ass!
Fluid change seems to have quieted some noises - good thing. A lot of noise still from the Exedy HD Twin clutch, but since it's quieter I'm not bitchin' at the moment.
Two new tires, keep the best of the four old ones, and a front end alignment make for a better feeling drive on crappy pavement. Toe was a mess on both sides up front. Combined off by over 3!!!! So, I'm writing off the odd wear that destroyed one of the tires to crappy potholes and roads for now. I'll try to remember to check them often.
We'll see.
I'm going to use the Evo to commute to work for a bit so I can have that new TC good and broken in and do a few 3rd-gear rips early next week. I'll send them off to Mellon and we'll finish up the 93 octane tune.
Then, on to race gas.
*Laugh*
Already have the roll center lowering kit and stainless steel brake lines collecting dust.
In the meantime, a set of stock wheels are gonna get the sandblast/powdercoat treatment and get wrapped in dedicated snows. Evo AWD in the snow! All in the name of gettin' that TC good and broken in by spring!
That's it for now. I'm back on the streets, kids. Not huntin' sasquatches yet, but, that will come.

** EDITED 11/15 11AM W/New Graph! **
93 Octane map complete. Mellon sent me a new "DLL" graph.
What's changed is a ported intake manifold and throttle body (via Buschur). What's interesting is comparing it with the first he sent me (from page 4 of this thread, but reposted here for viewing), there was a drop, especially in torque, from just installing the ported parts without a re-tune.
From Dynoflash to Mellon flash:

From Mellon flash w/ported parts to Mellon-tuned ported parts:

Again, I know, these are just bench numbers. I'm just looking at them for comparison's sake.
Now to get rid of what's left of 93 in my tank and on to race gas - 110 octane, I'm thinking! And some new spark plugs...

Nov 14 2008, 12:27 PM
Excellent numbers Kazz. That thing could be in the 11 with the right 60ft.
I'm not surprised that low end / Torque fell off after the ported intake parts were installed, before the re-tune. You made a very nice increase in the top end man.

OK, I'm floored.
Mellon e-mailed me a new graph. He didn't use the last runs for the graph. Here's the final:

Ported parts getting almost 30 awhp & awtq after tune! I'm sure that's because of other mods and stock wouldn't see such a return. I think Buschur says up to 20hp improvement.
OK, I'm jazzed. Just in time for winter.

Oh, and I edited the above post w/graphs to use this new one.

Time for some updates:
New wheels and rubber for autocross:

I'll get some better pics once mounted.
And for handling, since I think my front shocks are completely toast now:
Robispec Clubsports
Whiteline Max C Front Camber plates
Cusco Rear Camber Plates
Whiteline Precision steering kit
Rear Bump Steer
Rear Trailing Arm Bushings
Front and Rear Endlinks
Robispec Front Sway bar (I already have a Progress rear)
Whiteline Roll Center kit
Precision Laser Alignment/Corner Balancing
... all done by Robi through a special trip to Chicago the weekend of May 2nd!
That should put some used Eibach Pro Kit springs in the "available" pile, along w/the stock turbo, hotside, and O2 housing... and the bank account on life support ...
