Good plan buddy! Lets hope this one stays together. biggthumpup.gif
awd4kicks
Well the 'plan' is to make it stay together for a while and forego all out HP.

I'm trying to eliminate any questionable variable and run about half the HP that the short block is capable of. So unless there is more breakage for no apparent reason then I SHOULD be ok.
black92_tsi_awd
I'll be the first to call you out then! ph34r.gif biggrin.gif

Glad to hear your keeping it.
ncgalant
I'm going to be PISSED if this one has the same part throttle knock issues.
awd4kicks
Yeah, in the back of my mind I'm hoping that going back to a standard 2.0 I will be able to avoid some of the strange occurances I have been experiencing over my 3 year stroker battle. And that is one of the most annoying ones I would like to put behind me. Well that and the engines coming apart. wink.gif
treydawgs4g63T
WEll, i have to say I am amazed at the amount of trouble the stroker motor has caused you. Even though I havent been on the board as long as most I have never seen or heard of anyone having as much trouble. Maybe the stroker motors are just not cut out to be as good as they say, who knows.

Well, since i passed it up I guess you will have to show me what I missed out on.

Good Luck!
awd4kicks
I should clear that up a bit. I still believe in strokers, and like I said if I were going to go big again it would be with a stroker. Only, I would buy the best parts and possibly shortblock available if I did so.

I feel that I am a really good shade tree mechanic at best. I'm beginning to wonder if I have the experience (knowledge & patience) to build full-on race motors correctly. So over the past three years I have attempted to put together what I now relize was a full-on race motor, on a shoe string budget, with used parts that were not optimal from the start, learning about these strokers as I went. Trial and error alone took it's toll on many of the parts and I feel played a big roll in a rod finally coming out of the block.

So are strokers bad news... I don't think so. You just have to know your limits (budget & experience) and do it the right way the first time. Otherwise you will get caught up in the snow ball or domino effect as each incident builds up to another.

Thanks on the Buscher Stage 3 motor though. I hope I've gone far enough over the top to make a safely running DSM for a good couple of years. biggthumpup.gif
awd4kicks
I picked up my fresh Buscher Stage 3 short block Monday night. It looks just as good as you would expect. Got the oil pan with it since mine got ventilated. Thanks to Tommy for a incredible deal.

Tha Talon is in the garage. So I just need to start tearing her back down to have the radiator repaired and have the cylinder head checked. Then I'll get new gaskets and misc. pieces required to finish it in a couple weeks.

So by the beginning of the year I should have a pretty wicked, over the top 2.0 race motor...detuned for daily driver status and longevity! biggthumpup.gif

Excellant! biggthumpup.gif

Can't wait to see her on the street, and race her (and lose) at the track!

I second that motion!

Good news, man! Still going with the big turbo?
awd4kicks
Yeah, I'm going to stick with the FP3052 for now to see how it spools up. The power will obviously be available and all the supporting hardware is there for it. If I find that the 2.0 does not spool her up fast enough I will strongly consider going to the EVOIII 16g since it will have MAD spool and 380HP capabilities. It would be another money loosing proposition though... So we will try the big one first.
turbohcar
I have a prediction that it will spool faster than you think Marcus. Give 'er a shot and we'll see.

I want to see pix of were it came out at unsure.gif

What's wrong with this picture?
awd4kicks
I pulled and partially disassembled the 2.4 over the weekend to get the head and radiator chaecked and fixed where needed. Here are some pictures of the ventilation made by rod #3. Note that the Oil pan gouge has been hammered flat so I could get the T-case off. And to my surpirise I found that I could see all the way through the block when I started taking pictures. Aparently that rod came out both front and back where it was hidden by the starter. The starter took a couple minor hits but looks ok.

Can you see the scoring and gouging on the bottom of cylinder #3 inside there?
awd4kicks
And it's a shame because this is how beautiful it was from the top. cool.gif

Poor ol' girl. You'll have her ready in no time!
black92_tsi_awd
Damn! You sure do it up big Kicks!
awd4kicks
Got my Fluidyne radiator repaired already. Kalina tells me that 12 out of my 16 valves are bent/warped! I'm sure #3 piston hit it's valves, but the others must be warpped from excessive cylinder temperatures. It's not uncommon. It's expensive to the tune of $540 when you talk about that many 1mm oversized Ferrera valves. I can get a new stock head for that price but then I would lose all that I have put into this one. I will probably just have them freshen up the head with all new valves since 3/4's of them need replaced anyway.
JBone
Wow... ohmy.gif I just can't believe it...

I could not put that much money back in AGAIN... and people say I don't know when to quit.
turbohcar
You're back on the right track though Marcus. Keep it relatively simple and use the resources you have at hand. You've got a lot of money into that cylinder head, why give it up now.
black92_tsi_awd
Go, Kicks Go!!!!
awd4kicks
I'm just now getting the project rolling again since Christmas took a larger bite out of the budget than expected.

As usual I have to be experimental to some degree. A much less risky degree this time though.

I have just ordered 16 new 1mm oversized 'Manley' valves from Winner's Circle. It's true that I have been buying Ferrea for the past few years, but it hasn't seemed to have saved me anything by spending the extra to have 'The Best'. I was very unhappy to find that the latest set of Ferrea valves warped after only 2000 miles of break-in and tuning. I can get the Manely valves for about half the price saving me around $200 on the total head rework. The machine shop feels tha both Manely and Ferrea are good valves. To top it off SloBoy tells me that they strictly use Manley valves in their own engines!

Having said that, there is always a hint of doubt. Manley is a good quality name in the Domestic world, I just don't personally know anyone running them in the 4G63 even though SloBoy sells them.
awd4kicks
I'm going to stick with the FP3052 unless I find it doesn't spool-up fast enough out of a slow corner. Then I will go to an EVO3 16g. I have a feeling the 3052 will do just fine and the monetary aspect of the change will be a break even proposition for less HP at best.
Mitsu 77
I don't think you will find that to be an issue, the 3065 spool is very close to the 14b in my old DD. I was hitting full boost before 3800 last year.
awd4kicks
I finally got the broken 2.4 stroker totally disassembled tonight. Amazingly the shrapnel beat up piston number four and broke three out of the four oil squirters. You can see in the first picture that the crank took a little beating but nothing too deep. The second picture shows a piece of the block rotated and beat into it's own hole at the oil galley under cylinder three. The las picture id a final farewell to what is left of the engine I picked up in Chicago about four years ago when I began this stroker experiment.

Bonvoyage!

Ouch. I'm feelin' it.
ncgalant
When do you think she will be up and running? I can get you a stock chip with just the injectors burned up. Hopefully the part throttle knock thing died with that block.
awd4kicks
With the budget going to hell like it has, I'm shooting for the end of February to start the break-in process. Thanks for the offer NC. Keep in mind I still have your EPROM and mine.
awd4kicks
The Manley valves are in at Winner's Circle. I'll be picking them up and taking them to the machine shop early this coming week. biggthumpup.gif
awd4kicks
Got word today that I will be able to pick my cylinder head up from the machine shop next Thursday! All new Manley SS valves, new valve seals with fresh seats and guides! biggthumpup.gif

I also ordered a whole new gasket set and a new timing belt from JNZtuning the other night. I couldn't help but pick-up one of there Blingin coolant over flow containers! cool.gif I'm tired of the stock container being zip-tied on to the firewall in all its tacky glory.

JNZ had the best pricing I could find and they even knocked a few dollars off the price of the over-flow. These guys rock!
black92_tsi_awd
JNZ always treated me good too. Got all my rebuild seals through them too.
awd4kicks
Almost all the parts are finally in so I can start putting the Talon back together.

Schweet!!!

Need new tie rods too?? I see tie rod boxes in the lower right hand corner (yes, I've memorized all the boxes from Advanced, sue me).

Hahaha...yep. When you pop off the tie rods from the spindle as much as I do to pull the engine/transmission, they tend to get a little beat even with low mileage!

Good eye biggthumpup.gif

Mmmm...shiny.
awd4kicks
I picked up a set of used HKS 272 cams from Darryl & Susan today. Thank you! The engine is now entirely assembled except for the timing belt and the valve cover.

I should have everything ready to drop in after one more evening of work. If all goes well the talon should hit the road no later than next weekend depending on my schedule.

NCGalant, I'm going to need a base tune for a 2.0 using the 850cc injectors at the higher fuel pressure. I just want to keep it simple for the break-in period. Let me know when you might be able to meet-up some time this week. I know that you said you would help with this tune, but thanks in advance.

BTW - I'm glad that I'm getting all this build out of the way during the crappy weather. That means by the time it warms up I should be ready to rock! biggthumpup.gif
treydawgs4g63T
let me know when you go out with it cause im breakin in mine and would also like to see your car and meet you for the first time.

Also, i will be in need of a little experianced dsmer knolledge!
ncgalant
Not a problem, I'll be so happy to throw in a stock chip with just the injectors in there and see no part throttle knock. I can have that ready for you early this week.
awd4kicks
No problem TJ and thank you NC.

The engine is totally assembled and ready to go in as of tonight.
