Big bad $69 AdvanceAuto rebuilt unit. There were about three screws missing out of the back of the old starter, Guess it had seen better days.

After some test driving with the electrical fixed and the starter taken care of I seemed to be pushing coolant out of the system and the over flow! I just knew that my stock head gasket with the O-ringed head must have failed causing boost to enter the coolant system. Just to make sure my theory was correct, I borrowed Josh's CO2 tester for coolant. Yesterday I topped off the system and took it for a drive to try to add boost to the coolant for the test. When I got back I realized that my DUMB-ASS left the coolant cap off! AARGH! (For the record I have never done that before)

Coolant was everywhere and I couldn't test the system with low coolant. So today I picked up another 16psi coolant cap from Advance Auto and restarted the test. Strangely the coolant was not boiling out this time. I used the tester 3 times with the same result every time. No CO2 in the coolant!!! It was the cap! If I had not left the cap off by accident or tried to test my head gasket theory, I would have changed the head gasket for no reason and still not found the problem! I never would have guessed that the cap was bad because I just replaced it a couple years back with a brand new Mitsubishi unit.

good troubleshooting is the difference between a good technician and a parts changer... good job, glad to hear that after all of that, the fix was as easy as it was.

I installed my new Mitsubishi replacement Brake Booster hose this past week. There is definitely a one way valve in the hose. Something I had never realized before. I also installed a new home made MBC since I donated my last one to Josh's turbo Stang.

I understand the logic, but I am still amazed at how much more crisp and quick boost comes on now that it doesn't have to fill the brake booster up. Very nice. One of those things that I wish I had known and fixed a LONG time ago. It would have made a few of the closer races I've had over the past year less close. I'm also wondering if it would have helped my MPH at the track. The ET is probably stuck where it is until real race tires are used.

So when's the next track outing?

Well, my e-bay sale ended with a lot of watchers and a few bids. The highest being $7000, but it was from someone with no feed back in New York State.

As much as I LUVVV the GM LS series of engines. My mind has rapped all it's creative juices around transplanting an 03-04 cobra engine into the 65 stang. After doing some measuring it almost appears that this is a marriage meant to be. The previous owner narrowed the front shock towers to fit a Cleveland 351 in it. Those engines are the double wide of small block Fords.

I have a 351 Windsor sitting in the garage ready for a rebuild, but to tell you the truth the basic simplicity of that engine is just not turning me on. I am a glutton for punishment because I must have to have complex power plants to keep my interest. (read 4G63)

The 03-04 Cobra engine is all aluminum and good to 800HP. So it's as light or lighter than a small block Ford, but has the power potential of a Big block Ford that is too heavy for the front suspension on the ol' 65.

Plus the newer more technical engine engine will have great street manors while having the power potential I long for.

Hmmm I can't wait!

Stay with the brand, dude. Get a FoMoCo motor.

I, too, enjoy the sophisticated awesomeness of the LSX motor, but I know Sitzmore will help you make some tremendous power with a Ford Small Block.

You could alway complicate it and throw a big turbo on it!!

If I went with a regular ol' small block Ford I planned to go with a Nitrous or turbo power adder. The small block it's self wouldn't have nearly enough power to make it worth the trouble for me.

The 03-04 Cobra engine is by far the most complicated domestic V8 engine made within the past few years. It also already has most of the power available in it's stock form. It will make in the neighborhood of 500crank HP with a simple pulley swap on the supercharger.

OK...I got a lot of bites from E-bay and a ton of lookers. Obviously I did not sell the Talon. I am getting ready to put in a new set of ARP Head bolts and a new head gasket, and then I want to move it.

I am now willing to lower the price for this priceless race car to $6,500. Before I post it up for sale nationally, I wanted to offer it up to any DSMCentral members first.

Marcus, i will make a call today. I am in the market for another car right now and was about to purchase a 96 BMW M3. I will call the bank today and see what they will do on this. Its gonna be a tough sale due to the year, but i will try.

I did finally get a chance to pull the head tonight to replace the Head gasket and ARP studs. I found a very small 1/4" to 3/8" trace from cylinder #1 to a water jacket that verifies why my coolant was always lightly pressurized and more than often in the overflow tank. So I'll clean the surfaces and reinstall with the new components on Friday so I can bring it to the cook-out on Sunday.

I also found that my solid turbo to manifold gasket had broken in half. Luckily I've got a brand new 7cm gasket ready to use.

Im curious.. With the check valve and the exhaust gasket replaced... What kind of spool up time are you seeing?

I don't think it's any better. A while back we had a conversation about this and someone mentioned that the header on your EVO may be making the big difference in spool-up. I tend to believe this has something to do with it.

I don't know what wastegate actuator you have, but I wrestled with mine to get the best spool-up time...

I've got the Tial 44mm external.

There is also a big difference in spool-up depending on the tune. A timing map that leans toward retarding timing helps in spool-up, but it also made my Exhaust manifold glow red hot durring easy driving. There may be a happy medium, but my current tune has a much less abusive tune based on the factory scale.

Awakening to semi-dry roads and a bath of sunshine, I decided to get the Talon out today. I've been working on charging the battery off and on for a while now. Even so it was still mostly dead today. It looks like my super-deal $40 Odessy Racing battery that I bought from Darryl a few years ago has finally bit the dust.

I'll either have to buy another or use a jump pack at Cordova on the 1/1/2009 Hangover Fest.

All is right with the world again. I finally purchased a new Odyssey racing battery and got my fix of turbonium thrust. Could be from some of the weight savings now that my wallet is $160 lighter though.

I heard rumors that a marroon talon was seen spanking the shit out of a red vett... wonder if that was someone we know?
