I'm looking to get mine together by mid-March or so, since I have to wait for the weather to cooperate a bit more than it is now.
Shortblock is together, head is together, and I have almost all the little odds and ends I need.

She is definitely alive & kicking. Running pretty smoothly I might add. But alas, she will have to go under the knife again before the party starts.
While attempting to set the base timing and looking for oil leaks, I found a fairly healthy amount of oil leaking from behind the timing belt cover. Not on the belt luckily. I'll be pulling off the acc. belts and T-belt cover to get a look at 'er soon.

Being that most of the events are held in Peoria, I thought it might be nice to have one between the Champaign and Bloomington areas. Not only that, but I haven't had a decent get together with friends since I moved into my new place. There's plenty of parking and I just got a grill donated to me by the neighbors that moved out. I figured why not.
Any other suggestions for locale?

Through out the weekend I was able to put over 250 easy miles on the new engine. After I got a fresh EPROM from NCGalant on Saturday morning the engine purred like a kitten. I have a new respect for the factory tune and the engineers that came up with it. The engines I've run in the past few years didn't seem to run as smooth as this one, and the most notable difference was the stock tune chip. Thanks NC!
So far I'm half way through the main portion of the break-in proceedure. I've now got new spark plug wire protection sleeves installed to shield from premature grounding and the excessive heat between the engine and hood. Also ads a look of professionalism to the assembly.
I finally made time to install my home made upper control arm extenders on the rear suspension. I made these things over 3 years ago and have finally used them to remove the negative camber from the rear wheels!
So the short term plans are to change the oil tomorrow eve after work, reset the suspension height, take her in for a 4-wheel alignment Tuesday, and to knock out the rest of the break-in miles by the end of the week.
I've got my fingers crossed. So far I'm very happy with the new set-up.

Then park it until dsmcentral day.
I don't see that happening, but I am finding that I am pretty satisfied with the day-to-day performance without even getting in the boost. When you consider I can drive a mini van, an old Saturn or my Talon at little to no boost... I'll still take the Talon. So I may just leave the tune where it is for the regular grind and only change it for race tuning which HAS to be done before race day.
If the POS won't make it through tuning then it's not worth taking anyway.

At about 390 mile now.
I also got the alignment set today. Wow it was way off every where!
I do plan to run auto-x this year and I want the car to turn. At the same time I also wanted to go with a bit more tame set-up. The coil overs are set as low as I can get the Pro-kits. I set the front camber to -1.5 instead of the 2.5 - 3.0 that they were at. I had the rear camber set to factory setting of -1.1. This looks much better than the 0 setting I had them at after installing the upper control arm adjusters. The tow on all four corners had to be reset. That was a bear for the technician, but he got them all within spec. Driving smooth and looking better!

After some logging at the party last night we found that my initial boost was set to 10-11psi and running no knock as you would expect. NC and I made some pulls and got the boost set to 17-18psi with 0-1 count of knock when pulling in the correct RPM band.
I took her out for a little spin today and all I can say is... My DSM batteries are recharged. This thing pulls like a F***ing freight train for a DD!!! This is why I love DSM's man!
Boost isn't coming on until about 4k RPM, but the power gain is exponential from there up to the stock rev limiter at 7200RPM. The 2.4 stroker definitely gave more instant throttle response, but the over all power feels similar on the ol' butt-o-meter.
I think I will adjust the cam gears to move the power band a little lower in the RPM band and raise the rev limiter to around 7700RPM (500 more than stock). That should allow me to stay in the power band from shift to shift. Right now it seems to take a couple hundred RPM to get back on top of the HP oozing spool as it is right now.
So far so good at round 650 miles though.

Mar 19 2007, 02:34 PM
We did a run from 2000RPM in 2nd gear. The knock climbed to 19 counts until the boost came on. At that point the knock came back down.
The sluggish action of the engine alone would keep me from doing this in the real world and the knock was on it's way back down anyway. So I feel that when I pound on it at anywhere from 3500RPM and above I'll be just fine at these boost levels.
ncgalant
Mar 19 2007, 03:25 PM
It also seemed to be knocking worse in lower gears(1st and 2nd) with 3rd being very clean. With the last motor the knock would be at 43 from 2500rpm to 3200rpm pretty much no matter what. If He got into it and the knock went up, it stayed up. The other night on the new block, starting at 2000ish in 2nd the knock rose up to 19 counts somewhere between 3000 and 3500 and fell down to 10 by 4500 where it stayed all of the way through. I consider that a HUGE step forward.

Quick Update:
About 1000 miles now
Passenger rear brake pads & rotor replaced with the slides re-lubricated
Moroso Spiral muffler and Road Race dual tip fully installed with a quieter low to mid throttle volume . (The external dump from the front makes up for it on full boost though)
Able to run upwards of 24 psi with low knock levels. 22 psi with nearly no knock. all on BP 93 octane through the spiral muffler.
HP levels seem to be in a range to possibly hit my desired 11.9x on the street tune.
So far I'm VERY happy with the combination. I still need to do a few small clean-up items like mount the new coolant over flow bottle, hook-up the boost gage light and clean a mouse nest out of the HVAC somewhere.
If everything continues to go well I plan to get to the dyno within a few weeks to make sure it's dialed in. My main grief right now is that the dual ball bearing turbo is not hitting full spool until about 4500RPM. It's costing me mucho time in the first gear of a hard pull. I feel we may be able to modify A tune for this issue. Before the stock like tune was put in, my turbo was almost always spooled up using the strokers chip. So it can be done. It may not be healthy since it makes the entire turbine section red hot. So it may just be a race only tune/chip.

Project Date: 3.30.07-1250mi.
Some intuitive tuning and minor maintenance has brought full boost on board at approximately 3900RPM now! That's about a 600 to 900RPM improvement over what we were seeing. We have figured out Mitsubishi's tuning trick to shorten spool time...very cool. NCGalant has been excellent to work with and very energized on my project. He's nearly as persistant as I am and always seems to be thinking of ways that may help the cause.

NC has smoothed the lower maps to make my daily driving seem as stock as possible, but we owe most of that to the original Mitsubishi tune. We then concentrated on refining the tune in the upper maps for HP and for it to come on as quickly as possible. NC adjusted the timing maps and we leaned out the fuel maps at these levels. We didn't go overboard. The Air Fuel Ratio is still a bit rich and safe at 11.20:1 in the most extreme and dangerous map (WOT & Full boost). This has made 22 psi as high as we can go on BP 93 octane fuel without going higher than say 9 counts of knock at times. All this was done on a cooler night, so warmer temperatures should mean slower/but safer tune as the air density decreases.
To be honest though, this thing is starting to get scary. laying into the boost, watching the boost, RPM, oil pressure and the road as the car goes from say 90mph to 130mph in the very short order...It's making me a little uneasy to say the least. Hauling a$$ it is!
Problem now is that the stock, single synchro transmission does not want to shift up at the 8000-8500redline the motor wants to wind up to. It literally takes at least a full second or more to change gears without grinding them. Darryl uses double synchros on all gears just fine up in the 9k RPM range from what he tells me. I already have the double synchro 2nd and it looks like I can get a special 3rd and 4th gear with double synchros from TRE for about $375 plus shipping. I'm going to look into this, because all of this power with slow gear changes doesn't make much sense. Right now the thing looks like a Yo-Yo going down the road.
I still need to clean the HVAC out and install the coolant over-flow, but the boost gage light is repaired.

Trying to re-learn my driving skills...
This thing just does not want to shift quickly!
With such big spaces of time between shifts boost has to re-spool and I'm loosing a lot of ground. I'm not sure that I can get over 100mph in the 1/4 which isn't a whole lot better than stock. I mean I'm doing it in third gear, but it's too slow for all the mods. Dragged down by the transmission and my driving for now.

Project Date: 4.17.07-1750mi.
The biggest news... The car is still running after it's toughest weekend so far.
Last week I took care of an oil leak at my remote oil filter mount. I ended up changing the design and hose routing to a much cleaner and safer set-up. By Thursday I had pushed the car to approximately 105 in my make shift quarter mile which translates into a mid to high 12. This was an improvement by seat time alone, but it was still not the number I was looking for and the main problem as always was the inability to shift at higher RPM.
Friday after work I checked over the entire clutch mechanics. Every thing was in place and working properly. The only thing I found was about 1/2 to 1" of free play at the top of the pedal movement. Since my master cylinder rod was already turned all the way out I made a modification to the bracket allowing me to make up that difference. I now have full clutch pedal right from the top. This allows the clutch to disengage by about 3" off the floor as recommended by TRE. THIS MAKES ALL THE DIFFERENCE IN THE WORLD FOR MY PROBLEM! WOW.
After my initial run I was jacked with adrenalin just boiling up in me. With this newfound ability to shift, Josh and I felt the car had definitely hit low 12's. You know I couldn't let this kind of thing go un-utilized!
Later that night I hooked up with a guy running a 383 stroked small block vette that sounds like it was built by an F1 race car builder. The car is beautiful and I've seen it run first hand from the navigator seat of a particular EVO. I knew this car was fast and already knew I would see nothing but tail lights, but I went to the track with him just to see how it would turn out anyway.
We lined up from a dead stop. He was confident in his ride and gave me the launch and the leave. (Very cool). I brought the car up to the 5500RPM stutter box that had never been used to this point. I dropped the hammer and watched out the side for his car to move. Surprisingly he didn't have much trouble getting the Auto out of the hole on his 3XX street tires. With the leave I held him off in first but by second gear the vette began to walk by... This was my first point of astonishment. My engine was howling through the external dump and sounding like a jet air plane and this guy in a Killer vette is slowly walking by my with the most beautiful harmony of eight cylinders I've ever heard at full scream. As my tach reach the 8K redline I slammed third but the auto gained a half car. I lost a slight bit more ground and then shifted to forth with no problems, but lost another half car in the exchange. From that point I held my ground about 1.5-2 cars behind him as the tach reach 8k again and he is still on full boil. What the hell... I through the shifter into 5th and hoped for the best. I was still holding ground! My adrenalin was about to blow through the roof even though the tach was swinging a bit more slowly with the overdrive load on it. Then before I new it I heard some noise that sounded like a misfire. I looked down to find all the gages reading ok and the speedo buried!
He heard the same noise and thought it was his car. We both slowed down and went back to the pits. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I reengaged the clutch and found the engine still pulling smoothly.
A quick look-over the engine revealed all was well except my EGT pipe plug had apparently shot out of the exhaust manifold as it was glowing red after running full steam for five solid gear pulls!
I have replaced the plug and the car is still making a great daily driver!
To put things in perspective this corvette runs has run a best of 10.98 on this exact tune but with slicks. I will make no other assumption than I have a real good chance of being in the 11's (11.99?) on my 93 octane pump gas at 22-23psi! OH YEAH!
More fine tuning will come into play, but more to smooth out the DD activities.

Oh yeah... Let me even put the current Talon tune and the whole race into another perspective. I rode around with Natedogg helping him keep track of his tune and the pull of the GT35 with his 2.3 stroker are just SICK. Like mind bending AWD launches this thing makes you dizzy from a 50MPH roll launch.
When Nate gets all the bugs worked out of that car to shoot down the track...whatch out. I feel I would have less of a chance to hang with Natedogg than I did the vette.
BTW - I will put a little something together on the clutch mod soon to Nate.
